Sophomore women’s golfer Anna Watson was outstanding for the Eagles at the Lady Jaguars Invitational, hosted by IUPUI in Carmel Ind. Saturday-Sunday, April 16-17. Watson cruised to the individual title as she put up back-to-back career-best scores of three-under-par at the 5,921-yard Plum Creek Golf Club. Her efforts also helped lead Eastern Michigan to the team title at the event, where the Eagles bested six other institutions in a dominant fashion. The Green and White shot a two-day total of nine-over, 585, to best the second-place finisher by an incredible 16 strokes.

Individually, Watson was incredible for the Green and White. Aided by five birdies on day one, she shot a career-best three-under, 69, the first under-par effort of her career. That effort led all other players in the field by at least two strokes. Additionally, the score ties for seventh-lowest in EMU history. EMU's all-time record is a 66, fired by Kelsey Murphy at the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 22, 2015.

She was just as good on Sunday, where she again fired a three-under-par to complete consecutive rounds in the red for the first time during her collegiate career. This time, she fired six birdies, which tied for the team lead for EMU. After finding red on three of the first four holes of the front nine, Watson faced adversity, bogeying three straight as the fifth, sixth, and seventh holes, respectively. She fought back to card two pars before making the turn. Nearly perfect on the back, Watson did not go over par in the final nine holes of play. After two pars to open her final nine, she put together a stretch of three straight birdies to get herself to the three-under mark. She closed out her round with four pars to easily capture the leaderboard crown.

This is the first individual championship for Watson the team championship is the third of the 2021-21 campaign for the Eagles after winning the Golden Grizzly Invitational, Sept. 26-27, 2021, and the Shirley Spork Invitational, Oct. 4-5, 2021. It marked the first time since 2019-20 and just the fifth time (2006-07, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2019-20, and 2021-22) in program history that the squad has won at least three events during a single-season.  Overall, the victory marked the 28th title in school-history and the sixth under Head Coach Stephanie Jennings.

The victory was also special as it came on the heels of the passing of legendary EMU women's golfer Shirley Spork, who passed away Tuesday, April 12, at the age of 94. A true pioneer, Spork was one of 13 Founders of the LPGA in 1950. A decade later, Spork almost single-handedly created the LPGA Teaching & Club Pro Division.
