Junior placed fourth at the Chevron Silverado Showdown to help the Eagles to second place
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- For the second consecutive week, Baiyok Sukterm has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced April 10, after the junior helped the Eastern Michigan University team to a runner-up finish at the Chevron Silverado Showdown (April 6-8). The award not only gives Sukterm the accolade in back-to-back weeks but also keeps the honor in the program for the fourth consecutive week after Janae Leovao was honored March 13 and Jasmine Leovao earned the accolade March 27.
Sukterm (Bang Yi, Thailand/Panitchayakan Rajdamnern Tech/Lindsey Wilson), who won the Silicon Valley Showcase (March 30-31) last week in Millbrae, Calif., continued her strong run of play as she finished fourth overall in the Chevron Silverado Showdown at 8-under 208 (71-69-68) for her fourth finish in the top five this season. Sukterm, who defeated three players ranked higher than her in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) and six on the Scoreboard/Clippd ledger, posted the third-lowest score in program history and marked just the fifth time an Eastern player has shot 209 or better in a tournament. She also recorded two rounds in the 60s, marking back-to-back tournaments she has accomplished the feat after firing consecutive rounds of 68 at the Silicon event.
Sukterm's finish led the Eagles to a second-place finish behind No. 2 University of Southern California and ahead of No. 5 University of Oregon, marking the second-highest ranked team a current EMU athletic team has defeated (Baseball won 7-6 at No. 4 Clemson University, Feb. 18, 2011) while marking the seventh time in 10 tournaments EMU has placed first (three times) or second (four) this year.
An Eastern player has earned the weekly MAC honor four consecutive weeks and nine times overall this season, the most among all teams in the league with Kent State University next with five and Bowling Green State University with three. The nine awards are the most earned in a single season in program history, four more than the five accumulated four times previously, including the 2006-07, 2008-09, 2011-12, and 2012-13 seasons. Additionally, the nine honors attained are more than the previous 10 seasons combined (2015-16 through 2024-25) when the program tallied eight.
Individually, Sukterm has now earned weekly recognition for the third time this year after first being honored Oct. 10. She joined Janae Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State), who was honored Sept. 19, Feb. 20, and March 13, and Jasmine Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State), who earned her awards Oct. 24, Feb. 20, and March 27, as three-time honorees this season to mark the fifth, sixth, and seventh times a player has been honored three times in the same season in program history and the first since Sarah Johnson in the 2012-13 season. Additionally, this week's accolade marks the 50th MAC Golfer of the Week honor earned by an Eastern woman since the start of the 2000-01 season.
The Eagles have concluded their regular season schedule and have turned their attention toward the postseason, which gets underway with the Mid-American Conference Championships that will be played April 26-28 at Firestone Country Club-Fazio West Course in Akron, Ohio. Eastern is seeking its first MAC title in program history and, with it, an automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Tournaments.
