The GameAbove Golf Performance Center at Eastern Michigan University opened on Jan. 16, 2024, marking a major milestone for the EMU golf programs. Perched above the 18th green at Eagle Crest Golf Course and overlooking Ford Lake, the two-story, 13,000-square-foot facility was made possible by an $8 million gift from GameAbove, a group of dedicated EMU alumni. The project reflects EMU’s long-term commitment to excellence in collegiate golf, providing a state-of-the-art environment for both men’s and women’s teams.
The facility includes specialized spaces for every aspect of golf training. A 6,619-square-foot practice range allows players to work on full swings with targeted precision. The 5,383-square-foot chipping and putting area ensures short-game skills receive focused attention, while two TrackMan 4 Simulators, totaling 1,974 square feet, bring indoor technology to the forefront, enabling advanced swing analysis and year-round training regardless of weather. Additional features include locker rooms, team meeting spaces, and flexible indoor practice areas, all designed to support training, team strategy, and player development at the highest level.
The GameAbove Golf Performance Center honors EMU men’s golf coach Bruce Cunningham, a three-time MAC Coach of the Year who has guided teams to top-three finishes in 11 of his final 18 MAC Championships and placed players in six NCAA Tournaments. The center reinforces the program’s competitive edge and provides tools for sustained success on a national stage.
Construction began on Sept. 30, 2022, following approval from EMU’s Board of Regents in Dec. 2019. Progressive AE designed the facility, while Granger Construction served as the construction management team. The building was completed on schedule, providing the golf programs with modern spaces that combine training, technology, and team operations. In addition to the performance center, Eagle Crest Golf Course expanded in 2023 with a 2,700-square-foot clubhouse addition, which includes an expanded kitchen, lounge, and four golf simulators, further enhancing the overall experience for student-athletes and visitors.
The GameAbove gift reflects a broader commitment from EMU alumni to support student success, faculty initiatives, athletics, and the Ypsilanti community. Since its founding, GameAbove has contributed over $30 million to the University, with this project representing a transformative investment in the golf programs. The center elevates EMU’s facilities to among the finest in the Mid-American Conference and the region, providing student-athletes with a world-class training environment, integrating performance analytics, and strengthening EMU golf's visibility on the national stage.
