Eagles to compete in the 47th annual installment of the tournament

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team heads east to compete in the Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 13-14. The 54-hole event, hosted by Penn State University, will take place on the par-71, 7,171-yard PSU Blue Course.
The field consists of 14 teams, as the Eagles take on competitors from Binghamton, Colgate, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, George Mason, Penn State, St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island, Temple, Towson, and Valparaiso.
The Nittany Lions have dominated the Rutherford since it was established as the Nittany Lion Invitational in 1975, winning the tournament 30 times including each of the last eight events.
The tournament became known as the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 1983 to honor R.B. "Pop" Rutherford Sr., the man known to the Nittany Lions as the "father of Penn State golf." Rutherford organized the first Penn State golf team in 1922 and coached it until 1949. R.B. Rutherford Jr. continued his father's coaching tradition from 1950-1956 and furthered a legacy recalled each spring.
Eastern Michigan most recently competed in the tournament in 2022, finishing fifth with a team score of 879 (296-284-299). Individually, Zack Mason posted a 217 (74-69-74) to finish in a tie for 11th, while Cam Kellett (London, Ontario/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Nevada) tied for 15th with a final round 73 for a two-day tally of 219 (75-71-73).
Saturday will feature the first two rounds of the tournament, with the first round set to tee off at 7:30 a.m. The final round will be played Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m.
The renovated Blue Course hosted its first major amateur event in 2009, the Big Ten Conference Men's Golf Championship. With the updates and improvements made in 2007, the Blue Course now proudly sits with some of the top courses in the Big Ten. The Blue Course has hosted numerous events conducted by the USGA, FCWT, AJGA, IJGT, PGA Junior Series and the West Penn Golf Association.
