Men's Golf Places Seventh at Calusa Cup

Hess led the charge as three Eagles finished in the top 20

NAPLES, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The final 54 hole tournament of the regular season for the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team saw the Eagles place seventh overall at the Calusa Cup, April 5-7, at Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Fla., as three Eagles placed among the top 20 in the three-day event on the par-72, 7,281-yard course. Joshua Hess was the top finisher for the Eagles as the freshman placed 14th overall to collect his fifth top 20 finish of the season.
 
The Eagles finished seventh at 5-over 869 (283-291-295) with No. 3 University of Florida taking the team title at 22-under 842. No. 2 University of Virginia was second at 18-under 846 with No. 45 Purdue University third at 9-under 855. Eastern finished ahead of fellow Mid-American Conference foe Miami University, who was eighth at 45-over 909.
 
Individually, Paul Chang of Virginia was the medalist at 12-under 204 while Ryan Shellberg (University of Iowa) and Wilhelm Ryding (University of South Florida) tied for second at 8-under 208. Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) was six strokes back at he finished 14th at 2-under 214 (72-71-71), shooting at or below par in all three rounds for the third time this year to finish under par in a tournament for the sixth time. He was followed by Robby Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College), who was one stroke behind at 1-under 215 (70-73-72) thanks to two rounds at or below par for the third time this year.
 
Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) tied for 17th at 1-over 217 (70-70-77) to record his sixth top 20 finish of the year and help the Eagles place three players in the top 20 of the same tournament for the third time this year. The first came at the Hal Williams Collegiate (Feb. 16-17) with the second following one event later at the All-American Intercollegiate (March 16-17).
 
Two other Eagles competed in the tournament with Leo Mihaich (Bell Ville, Argentina/Figuero Alcorta Normal School/Oklahoma Christian) tying for 32nd and Rory McDonald-O'Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/USC-Aiken) finishing 36th. Mihaich shot 10-over 226 (71-77-78) while McDonald-O'Brien carded a score of 14-over 230 (77-78-75).
 
Individual Notes
» Joshua Hess posted his fifth top 20 finish of the season while finishing at or under par for the tournament for the sixth time. Hess shot 214 for the fourth time this year as well to tie for his third-best 54-hole score with only his 206 at the Hal Williams Collegiate (Feb. 16-17) and his 213 at the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 8-9) bettering those scores. Additionally, he shot at or below par in all three rounds for the third tournament this year.
» Robby Turnbull recorded his fourth top 20 finish of the year and his third tournament where he shot under par. He also turned in multiple individual rounds at or below par for the third time this season.
» Charlie Box posted his sixth top 20 finish in 11 tournaments played with his tie for 17th. He also recorded multiple rounds at or below par for the eighth time this year.
 
Up Next
Eastern will travel to Dublin, Ohio, April 20, to take part in the single-round Muirfield Shootout, hosted by Miami University, at the Country Club of Muirfield Village. The course is home to the annual Memorial Tournament, hosted by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year (June 4-7). The event will be the Eagles' final tune up before heading to the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 3-5, at Holiday Farms Country Club in Zionsville, Ind.
