His second title of the season helped Eastern finish in a tie for second place as a team
DUBLIN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Charlie Box used a barrage of birdies over his final three holes to tie for the individual title and help the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team to a tie for second place at the inaugural The Muirfield Shootout, a single-day, 36-hole event at the Country Club at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, April 20. The event, which featured six teams from the Mid-American Conference, was played on the same par-72, 7,068-yard course designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus.
Kent State University took the team title with a score of 3-over 579 to edge a trio of teams that tied for second place at 4-over 580, including No. 98 EMU (288-292), No. 71 Michigan State University, and tournament host Miami University. No. 93 Xavier was fifth at 6-over 582 to round out the top five.
Individually, Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) captured a share of his second tournament title this season and the seventh of his career as he powered his way home with birdies on his final three holes to climb into a share of medalist honors with Miami's Liam Nelson. Box, who shot 3-under 141 (70-71=141), posted the fifth-best two-round score in program history while becoming only the third member of the program since the start of the 2000-01 season to capture multiple titles for the Eagles while becoming the first since the 2006-07 season to win multiple times in the same season, joining Graham Hill on the list after he won the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate one week before claiming the 2007 MAC Championship. Box, who entered the day ranked No. 320 in the collegiate rankings, finished under par for the eighth time in 12 events this year to help him place ahead of five higher-ranked opponents in the field.
Box led a charge of three individuals finishing in the top 20 for the second consecutive tournament as Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/VCU) tied for 11th at 1-over 145 (72-73) while Robby Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College) tied for 18th after shooting 3-over 147 (71-76). Chan posted his second-best finish of the year and his fourth top 20 showing of the season while Turnbull registered his fifth top 20 placement.
Rory McDonald-O'Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/USC-Aiken) tied for 27th at 5-over 149 (75-74) as he posted the second-best 36-hole score of his career after shooting 143 at the Bobcat Invitational, March 20-21, 2023, while playing for the University of South Carolina-Aiken. Leo Mihaich (Bell Ville, Argentina/Figuero Alcorta Normal School/Oklahoma Christian) and Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) also competed in the event as they tied for 57th at 11-over 155 (81-74) and tied for 7th at 15-over 159 (79-85), respectively.
Individual Notes
» Charlie Box won his second tournament of the season and the seventh of his career. His earlier win in 2025-26 came at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 6-7, 2025, where he shot 15-under 201 and tied for first before winning in a playoff. The win is his first in a 36-hole event and marked the first two-round medalist for the program since Christopher Ross won the Cleveland State Invitational, Sept. 11-12, 2006.
» Charlie Box shot 3-under 141 to finish under par for the eighth time in 12 tournaments this season while tying for the fifth-lowest 36-hole score in program history. His score is the lowest since 2005 when Graham Hill won the Hoya Invitational, Oct. 22-23, 2005, with a score of 139.
» Charlie Box captured the 16th title for Eastern since the start of the 2000-01 season and joins Korey Mahoney and Graham Hill as the only players in that span to win multiple titles. Additionally, he is the first Eagle to win multiple tournaments in the same season since Hill won twice during the 2006-07 season with wins at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate, April 28-29, 2007, before capturing the MAC Championship, May 2-5, 2007.
» Charlie Box came into the tournament ranked No. 320 in the Scoreboard/Clippd rankings (April 20) and finished ahead of five players ranked higher on the list, including No. 189 Caleb Bond of Michigan State (t-16th), No. 194 Cayse Morgan of Xavier (t-11th), No. 202 Ashton McCulloch of MSU (3rd), No. 284 TJ Barger of Illinois State (t-11th), and No.311 Isaiah Ibit of Kent State (t-46th).
» Tim Chan tied for 11th at 1-over 145 for his second-best finish of the season after placing third at the Houston All-American Individual event, March 17-18. It also stood as his fourth top 20 finish this season.
» Robby Turnbull tied for 18th at 3-over 147 to post his fifth top 20 showing of the season.
» Rory McDonald-O'Brien shot 5-over 149 to record the second-best 36-hole score of his collegiate career. His best came his freshman season when he shot 143 for South Carolina-Aiken at the Bobcat Invitational, March 20-21, 2023.
Team Notes
» The Eagles' score of 580 marked the fourth-lowest 36-hole score recorded in program history and just the ninth time the team has finished at 590 or lower in a two-round event (including events shortened because of inclement weather).
» Eastern, who entered the event ranked No. 98 in the Scoreboard/Clippd rankings (April 20), finished tied with No. 71 Michigan State and ahead of No. 93 Xavier, who was fifth. Those three teams were the only three in the field ranked among the national top 100.
Up Next
The regular season has ended for Eastern as the Eagles will now set their sights on capturing their first conference crown since 2019 when they head to Holiday Farms Country Club in Zionsville, Ind., for the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 3-5.
