Joshua Hess Named MAC Men’s Golfer of the Week

Freshman earned his first weekly accolade following strong finish in Florida
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Joshua Hess has been voted the Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced today, April 10. Hess, a freshman on the Eastern Michigan University team, was the Eagles' top finisher at the Calusa Cup (April 5-7), the team's final 54-hole tournament ahead of the MAC Championships in early May.
Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) posted his fifth top 20 finish of the season while finishing at or under par for the tournament for the sixth time as he placed 14th at the Calusa Cup after shooting 214 over three rounds. His score marked the fourth time this year he has shot 214 to tie for his third-best 54-hole score with only his 206 at the Hal Williams Collegiate (Feb. 16-17) and his 213 at the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 8-9) bettering those scores. Additionally, he shot at or below par in all three rounds for the third tournament this year to lead the Eagles in Florida.
The honor is the first earned by the freshman and the third by an Eastern Michigan rookie this year as fellow freshman Robby Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College) was honored twice (Feb. 20 and March 27). Overall, three Eagles have earned the MAC's weekly award this season with Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) a three-time honoree (Oct. 3, Oct. 10, and Nov. 7). All told, Hess is the 28th different Eastern player to earn MAC Golfer of the Week honors since the start of the 1999-00 season while earning the 48th award in that time.
Hess and Eastern will travel to Dublin, Ohio, April 20, to take part in the single-round Muirfield Shootout, hosted by Miami University, at the Country Club of Muirfield Village. The course is home to the annual Memorial Tournament, hosted by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year (June 4-7). The event will be the Eagles' final tune up before heading to the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 3-5, at Holiday Farms Country Club in Zionsville, Ind.
