Sophomore MJ Smith was outstanding for the Green and White as it put together an incredible performance at the 14-team Boilermaker Invitational, Saturday-Sunday, April 9-10. In fifth place heading into the final 18 holes, Smith helped lead an incredible charge that put EMU in third place for the tournament, behind only two, nationally-ranked opponents (Illinois, Purdue).
Smith was the best player for EMU from start-to-finish, shooting an even-par, 71 in the first round before firing a one-under, 70, in the second round. Despite gusts of nearly 25 miles per hour during round three, he was still able to shoot a 73, which capped a wire-to-wire weekend leading EMU. Smith carded three birdies during the round, and paired that with 10 pars. The second-year standout did not record a score worse than bogey on his final round card.
Smith finished sixth overall, his second-career top-10 posting.
