Senior freestyle specialist Becca Detro led the Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team to a convincing first place finish at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 4-5. Detro accounted for 199 of Eastern’s 1230 points on the weekend as the Eagles topped Wayne State, Tiffin, Ashland, Ball State, and IUPUI. Competing in seven events at the invite, Detro earned points in all of her races, highlighted by four first place finishes. Opening the weekend in the 100 Freestyle, Detro shaved more than a half a second of her preliminary time to claim the top spot on the podium. Touching in with a season-best time of 51.83, the Carmel, Ind. product reeled in her second win in the event this season. Detro went on to win the 200 Free behind another season-best time (1:52.19) before adding another finals finish in the 500 Free. Despite a push in the final split of the race, Detro could only move so far up the rankings. Posting her best time of the season in the event, Detro added 11 points to the Eagles total with an eighth place finish. While Detro’s individual accomplishments fueled the Eagles, her contributions on four relay squads helped the Green and White secure the win. In addition to helping EMU to second place finishes in both the 200 and 400 Medley Relays, Detro etched her name in program laurels. Teaming up with freshman Dora Vrcic, senior Mary Kate MacLean, and junior Grace Van Allen, Detro and her teammates shed nearly seven seconds off their preliminaries time in the 400 Free Relay to claim the top spot on the podium. The squad’s season-best performances bested their previous top-ranked time in the conference. Detro’s day came to a close with a meet-record time of 7:28.99 for a first place finish in the 800 Free Relay. Competing in the event for the first time this season, the Eagles shattered the previous conference best time in the event this year by roughly 15 seconds.
