Vega Leads Golf to Strong Showing in Chattanooga

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team placed seventh in the 15-team Chattanooga Classic, March 28-29, on The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., as the Eagles finished ahead of three teams in the national top 100, including Campbell University (No. 46), University of Michigan (No. 72), and Xavier University (No. 79). Freshman Mariana Vega (Barranquilla, Columbia/Colegio Karl C. Parrish) was the top finisher for the Eagles as she tied for 18th overall, a spot that tied or placed her ahead of six individuals ranked in the national top 125.
Vega captured her third top 20 finish as a collegiate player as she finished the tournament at 8-over 224 (73-78-73) on the par 72, 6,180-yard course that will serve as the host site of the 2026 U.S. Women's Amateur. Vega, who ranked third in the tournament on par 3s at 2-under, entered the tournament ranked No. 622 nationally and tied with two players in the top 125, including No. 32 Megan Streicher (University of North Carolina) and No. 118 Addison Klonowski (University of Florida) while defeating four others on the list, including teammate Savannah de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d'enghien, Belgium/Institut de l'Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) who tied for 30th, Katie Li (Duke University) at 35th place, and the pair of No. 60 Alicia Olsson (Campbell) and No. 98 Helen Yeung (UNC), who tied for 45th.
De Bock, who finished the tournament with 10 birdies, ranked eighth in the field, finished with a 12-over 228 (79-74-75). She was followed by Erina Tan (Belmont, Western Australia/Mount Lawley Senior), who tied for 54th at 17-over 233 (73-77-83), Riley Kim (Aldie, Va./Lightridge), who tied for 58th at 19-over 235 (81-81-73), and Angelica Holman (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy/Daytona State/Georgia), who tied for 76th at 27-over 243 (78-86-79).
In the team scoring, No. 27 Florida won the event at 16-over 880 (300-292-288) while No. 13 University of Virginia was second at 25-over 889 (304-299-286) and both No. 10 North Carolina (294-307-289) and No. 94 University of Wisconsin (295-293-302) finished tied for third at 26-over 890. The Eagles finished seventh at 49-over 913 (303-310-300) with No. 56 University of Georgia, the program led by current EMU Head Coach Josh Brewer for the previous 12 years that featured EMU Assistant Coach Caterina Don the past five season and de Bock last year as a freshman, was just ahead of EMU in sixth at 42-over 906 (299-306-301).
By finishing seventh, the Eagles picked up wins over three top 100 teams. Both No. 46 Campbell (313-305-297) and No. 72 Michigan (311-306-298) tied for eighth, two strokes behind the No. 128 Eagles, while No. 79 Xavier shot 57-over 921 (306-307-308) to tie for 11th. In the Mid-American Conference, when one of its own defeats a team from a "Power Four" conference, they 'Fly the Flag' to indicate such victories, of which the Eagles collected two. The first came over Michigan (Big Ten Conference) while the second came over Big XII Conference member University of Cincinnati, who was 10th at 52-over 916 (305-303-308). The wins are the second and third of the year after EMU defeated Michigan (sixth place to eighth place) at the Gators Invitational, March 7-8.

The EMU program has a busy week ahead of it as two tournaments are on the slate. First, Caterina Don, the No. 36-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, will travel to Augusta, Ga., to compete in the 2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur, April 2-5, with Josh Brewer serving as her caddy. The EMU team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., April 6-7, to compete in Purdue University's Boilermaker Classic at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Course for the Eagles' final tune-up before playing in the Mid-American Conference Championships, April 20-22, in Muncie, Ind.
