A late second-half comeback pushed Eastern past Western

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team (3-7-2, 2-2-0 MAC) overcame a 0-2 deficit in the first half to hand Western Michigan University (4-6-1, 2-1-1 MAC) its first Mid-American Conference loss, 3-2. The comeback marks the first time the Eagles have erased a two-goal deficit to win. Eastern has come back from being down two goals once before, coming back to tie Oakland, 3-3, Aug. 19, 2012 at Scicluna Field.

In the first half, redshirt junior goalkeeper Mabel Dunn (Oakville, Ontario-White Oaks Secondary) made a huge save in the 23rd minute to keep the Eagles within one. A few minutes into the second half, Dunn made an athletic one-handed save on a shot that was headed for the top right corner.

The Eagles had multiple opportunities to score early in the second half, including two shots on goal by redshirt senior Kristin Hullibarger (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson), two headers off of corner kicks, and one shot by Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) that ricocheted off the top right post.

Down 0-2, momentum shifted for EMU in the 70th minute when junior Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) dribbled through the Broncos' defense for a score. Moments later, freshman Amanda Cripps (Bradford, Ontario-Trinity Catholic) drew a foul in the Broncos' box and was awarded a penalty kick, which she slipped past the Western Michigan goalkeeper to tie the game at 2.

With under eight minutes remaining, Shira ripped a rocket from well beyond the box that found the top left corner for the game-winner, 3-2.

Eastern's offensive kept the Broncos' goalkeeper busy with eight shots placed on net, including two apiece from redshirt junior Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) and sophomore Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy). On the day, the Green and White out-shot Western 16-to-14, while also earning more corners, nine-to-three.

Shira and Cripps have each scored a goal in their last two games, sitting at four and three goals on the season respectively. Shira's two goals on the day are a new career-high.

Eastern Michigan will travel south for a conference matchup against the University of Toledo, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The Eagles will return to Scicluna Field Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. as they host Bowling Green University.
