A second-half comeback led the Eagles to victory
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University soccer team defeated Mid-American Conference opponent University at Buffalo, 2-1, Sunday, Oct. 27 at Scicluna Field. The game proved memorable for all involved, as five seniors were recognized at halftime for senior day.
Just under 30 seconds in, Buffalo found an opening in the box and took advantage of the opportunity, scoring to take a 1-0 lead.
Redshirt senior Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) attempted to pull the Eagles even in the 21st minute, working her way into the box and getting a shot off from the center. However, the Bulls' keeper was able to make the stop. Buffalo would hang on to its lead through the end of the first half.
Redshirt senior Kristin Hullibarger (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) found the equalizer in the 57th minute. Finding a pass from junior Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay), Hullibarger sent it to the back left corner to tie the game at one.
20 minutes later, Shira would find the game-winner for the Green and White. After having her initial shot sail over the goal, Hullibarger was able to meet the shot on the other side of the box. Crossing it from right to left, Shira connected on the cross to send it to the back of the net to seal the win for the Eagles, 2-1.
With their goals and assists, Shira surpassed the 20 career points mark to land at 21, while Hullibarger reached 49 career points to move in to a tie for ninth place on the all-time points list.
Junior Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Theresa) had one save for EMU. The Bulls narrowly edged the Eagles in shots, 14-to-13, but Eastern had the advantage in corner kicks, three-to-two.
The Eagles will travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. Thursday, Oct. 31 to take on Central Michigan in the final regular season MAC game. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
