YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — With the clock ticking down under a minute, sophomore Tessa Osborne (Mentor, Ohio-Lake Catholic) slotted home the game-winning goal to lift the Eastern Michigan University soccer team past Creighton University, 2-1, Friday afternoon, Aug. 31, at Scicluna Field.
The Eagles were all over the Bluejays, racking up a season-high 25 shots to CU's 13, and manufacturing a season-high 13 corners.
A corner kick setup Eastern Michigan's early strike. The service from redshirt sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) was redirected by senior Mikayla Cupp (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) and sophomore Marla Cobetto (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) at the far post, before Chatzis slotted a shot past the Creighton keeper. Chatzis' goal, the first of her career, put the Eagles in front, 1-0, just four minutes into the match.
EMU's 1-nil lead stood into the midway point of the second half when Creighton was awarded a penalty kick. CU's Taryn Jakubowski slipped a shot inside the left post.
After a number of close calls, the Eagles earned a free kick just outside the 18. McNeill played it short to sophomore Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) who delivered a service across the box and to the feet of a waiting Osborne. Collecting the cross at the far post, the Mentor, Ohio native took a touch and buried the game-winner.
