Hlynur Andresson Poised for First NCAA Championship Appearance

This is the third straight year EMU has sent an individual qualifier to the national championship
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Redshirt senior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge) of the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team will represent EMU at the NCAA Championships, Saturday, Nov. 18, in Louisville, Ky.
The news of his individual qualification came one day after he placed second in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 11, in Terre Haute, Ind. Andresson was near the front of the pack throughout the entire race, as he ultimately crossed the finish line just six seconds after the regional champion to claim runner-up and all-region honors.
His second-place was the highest finish by an Eagle in the regional competition since 2006, when Corey Nowitzke took home the title.
The team co-captain continues the trend of Eagles who have won the individual MAC title and went on to qualify to the NCAA Championships. The list of EMU harriers to accomplish this feat include greats Boaz Cheboiywo (2001), Gavin Thompson (2002 and 2003), Gordon Minty (1972, 1973, and 1974), Corey Nowitzke (2006), and Nick Raymond (2015 and 2016).
Andresson will be joined by three other individual qualifiers from the Great Lakes Region, as Ben Veatch from Indiana, and Oliver Hoare and Joe Hardy from Wisconsin also earned at-large bids.
The NCAA Championships will take place in Louisville, Ky. at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, with the women scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m., while the men start their race at 11:45 a.m. The competition will be livestreamed by FloTrack, which requires a FloPRO subscription.
