SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Oct. 2, at Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The men raced in the Blue 8k at 10:40 a.m. and the women raced in the Gold 5k at noon, with the women finishing fifth, and the men finishing 10th.
How it Happened - Women
The women turned in a standout performance in the Gold 5k, finishing fifth out of 24 teams with 186 points. Toledo won the Gold 5k with 71 points. Mercy Chepkemoi (Molo, Kenya/Kaplelach Secondary School) led the Eagles with an 11th-place finish at 17:33.71, recording her first 5K time in collegiate competition. Christiana Coleman (Pompano Beach, Fla./Dillard/Florida) was close behind in 13th at 17:35.12, a personal best by 51.48 seconds (18:26.6). Mara Longenecker (Freeland, Mich./Freeland/Michigan) placed 45th at 18:16.03, a personal best by 28.8 seconds. Sophie Emin (Easton, Pa./Easton Area/Rutgers) finished 59th at 18:22.86, a personal best by 5.1 seconds, and freshman Kaiya Fujioka (Whitby, Ontario/Brooklin) completed the scoring five in 60th at 18:24.65, a personal best by 22.5 seconds.
Frankie Moore (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) finished in 73rd at 18:34.34, a personal best by 24.6 seconds, and Kaelyn Becken (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) finished in 93rd at 18:40.97, a personal best by 18.8 seconds. Liv Hatch (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished 99th at 18:44.90, Erika Van Loton (Garden City, Mich./Huron Valley Lutheran) placed 108th at 18:50.27, and Ella Luker (Columbus, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) finished 164th at 19:30.05.
How it Happened – Men
The men finished 10th out of 18 teams in the Blue 8k with 286 points, competing in a field that included Notre Dame, NC State, Clemson and Indiana. Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) led the Eagles with a 32nd-place finish and a time of 24:00.8, a personal best improved his previous mark by 10.8 seconds. Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) followed in 52nd at 24:26.8, with Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) placing 57th at 24:29.7. Ronan Codyre (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) finished 72nd at 24:40.9, and freshman Mohammed Mohammed (Cary, N.C./Green Level) rounded out the scoring five in 91st at 24:52.9 — a personal best by 47.8 seconds in only his second collegiate 8k.
Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County) and Blake Rodgers (Belpre, Ohio/Belpre/Wright State) finished 106th and 113th, respectively. Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) placed 123rd at 25:32.3, a personal best by 28.5 seconds. Carson Vanderschaaf (Marquette, Mich./Marquette Senior) finished 143rd at 26:03.3.
