Eagles Can't Keep Up in 8-4 Defeat to Toledo

McGeein hit his 13th home run of the season
The Eagles (20-33, 10-13 MAC) pieced together eight hits in the contest, and were once again led by the senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall). The veteran had two hits, including his second home run in as many games, the 13th of his season. He now has 32 for his career. Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) had the other two-hit game, collecting a pair of singles as well as an RBI.
Junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) had two stellar innings in relief, only surrendering two hits and striking out one.
Eastern stole one in the third inning on the legs of redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw). After sitting on second after a single and advance on a throw, Gill swiped his 34th bag of the season at third, and came in to score on a wild throw, giving EMU the 1-0 lead.
Starting pitcher senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. Jan Jacinto College)) only allowed one hit in the first three innings, and struck out the side in the third, but Toledo (17-36-1, 12-11 MAC) broke through in the fourth with four runs on five hits, including three extra base hits. Heading into the fifth, UT led 4-1.
The senior starter was chased in the fifth after giving up another run on a pair of hits, forcing EMU to go to the pen. In relief, sophomore Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry) ended the fifth with no further damage, keeping the 5-1 tally into the sixth.
One run came across for EMU in the sixth with a two out knock from Mioduszewski. With McGeein on second, the left fielder smacked a line drive single to right, scoring the third baseman and tightening the gap to 5-2. They added one more in the seventh with an RBI groundout from freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), making it a two-run game into the stretch.
Toledo got the runs back plus one in the seventh, getting three on two hits, putting the UT lead at a game-high 8-3. The Eagles scored in their third consecutive inning in the eighth, this time via the long ball, on McGeein's second in as many games. His solo shot to left field made the game 8-4 into the final inning. EMU got a single, but did nothing with it, sealing the 8-4 defeat.
The Eagles wrap up the 2016 regular season with the final game of the series with the Rockets. First pitch from Scott Park is set for 1 p.m.
