Eastern tallied their 349th strikeout, 10th best in school history
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team wrapped up the 2016 regular season with a 14-2 defeat to the University of Toledo, Saturday afternoon, May 21, at Scott Park. The Eagles finish the regular season with 20-34 record, and 10-14 in Mid-American Conference play, and will head into the MAC Tournament as the No. 8 seed.
There were a couple highlights in the contest for the Eagles. Beginning on offense, senior Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single. Freshman Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) collected his first career EMU hit with a single in the ninth. Finally, sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) had a pair of hits, his team-best 18th multi-hit game of the season. He also drove in a run.
Defensively, EMU had a team milestone. They struck out four batters as a staff, putting their season total at 349 for the season which is 10th all-time in EMU history.
The Eagles tallied three hits in the first two innings, but had nothing to show for it after some tight defense from UT (18-36-1, 13-11 MAC). The scoreless tie was broken in the third with some booming hits from the Eagles.
With two outs, senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) ripped a double down the left field line, setting up senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall). The slugger cranked a long fly ball to right center, and despite having the beat on it, the centerfielder dropped it, allowing Wilson to score and McGeein to get to third. The next hitter, Williams, blooped a single to center, scoring the second run of the frame, giving EMU a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third.
UT had a little two-out magic of their own in the third, tying the game back up. With the bases loaded, a single up the middle scored a pair of Rockets, making the contest 2-2 into the fourth.
The hot-hitting of the Rockets carried over to the fourth, giving them a three-run lead. They plated the runs on three hits and a pair of walks, allowing Toledo to have their first lead of the game at 5-2 into the fifth. The game was broken open in the sixth when UT doubled their run total with five runs on just two hits, but three Eagle errors. The five unearned runs lengthened the Rocket lead to 10-2 with just three innings remaining.
EMU could not get anything else on the board in the final three innings, while Toledo tallied four more unearned runs, sealing the 14-2 defeat.
Eastern now turns its sights towards the MAC Tournament, which begins next Wednesday, May 25. As the No. 8 seed, EMU will face off against the No. 1 seeded Kent State University. First pitch from All Pro Freight Stadium is set for approximately 4:30 p.m.
