AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell in its first game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament to top-seeded Kent State University, 1-0, Wednesday night, May 25, at All Pro Freight Stadium.  The difference in the game was a solo home run for the Golden Flashes (42-12) in the second inning.

It was an excellent start from sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton), who went the first 4.1, giving up just one run and striking out five, tying a career-high.  Senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit) was just as stout in his 3.2 innings to finish the game, not yielding a hit and striking out four.

The Eagle (20-35) offense had trouble getting anything going all day, only collecting four hits, all singles.  They also reached base four other times on three walks and a hit by pitch, but never advanced anyone past second base.

Kent State's home run gave the Golden Flashes the only run they needed in the second, giving them the 1-0 lead.  Despite the homer, Mattson was solid through three, striking out one in each of the first two innings.

The sophomore was just as strong in the fourth, getting two more K's to up his total to four in the first four innings, and keeping the 1-0 deficit into the fifth.  Mattson struck out one more in the fifth for his career-high tying fifth strikeout, but was lifted for a reliever with one out.

Marsinek took over and got the next two batters to pop out and strikeout, keeping the pitcher's duel intact ahead of the sixth.  The veteran struck out another in a six-pitch sixth inning, keeping the Eagles within striking distance.

Following the seventh scoreless frame for EMU, Marsinek kept battling in the bottom of the seventh, striking out his third in as many innings.  He did the same in the eighth, giving the Eagles one more crack at the Flashes in the ninth.  Despite getting a man on, KSU kept EMU off the board, sealing the 1-0 defeat.

Eastern will get back into action tomorrow from Avon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.  The elimination game will be against the  loser of the Northern Illinois and Toledo game.
