AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team advanced to the third day of the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 6-2 victory over Northern Illinois University Thursday afternoon, May 26 at All Pro Freight Stadium.  The Eagles (21-35) earned their first MAC Tournament win since 2012.

Eastern's bats came alive in the game, springing for 10 hits, its first double-digit hitting effort since May 10.  Three players had two-hit days, while two also had two-RBI games.  Leading the Eagles was redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) who had two hits, including a two-run double.  Fellow redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) had the other two-RBI contest, scoring a pair on a double of his own.  Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) had EMU's fifth RBI as well a double in a 2-for-4 game.  Finally sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) had his 19th multi-hit game of the season with a pair of knocks, including his second triple of the year.

It was an excellent start for freshman Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) as the lefty earned his third win of the season after going five shutout innings, while only giving up four hits and striking out four as well.  In relief, junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) went 2.1 to finish the game, only allowing one base runner on a walk.

The Eagles struck first in the second inning with some small ball.  After back-to-back singles from senior Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) and junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) put runners on the corners, Stidham laid down a perfect bunt past the pitcher for a single, scoring the first run of the ballgame.

On the mound, Butzin was effective in his first three innings of work, striking out three without giving up a run, keeping the 1-0 tally into the fourth inning.  The rookie kept NIU off the board in the fourth and fifth innings, while notching another K, setting up the big bottom half of the fifth for EMU.

Leading off the frame, Stidham roped a double to straightaway centerfield.  Next up, Williams bunted a single to third base, putting runners on the corners with no outs.  The Eagles then used small ball for the second time, plating their second run on a squeeze bunt from sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington), putting the score at 2-0.

After a wild pitch put runners on second and third, Gill broke the game open with a two-run double to left centerfield, doubling EMU's lead to 4-0.  After an intentional walk to get to Mioduszewski, the leftfielder delivered with EMU's third double of the inning, plating a pair and extending the Eagle lead to 6-0 with four innings to play.

A scoreless sixth led to the seventh where the Huskies broke the shutout with a pair of runs on two doubles and a walk, cutting the score to 6-2 into the stretch.  That was when Delaplane was called on from the bullpen, shutting down NIU down the stretch for the 6-2 win.

Eastern now continues it's postseason with game three from Avon tomorrow, May 27.  First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. against Toledo.
