AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team, off the complete game gem from senior right handed pitcher Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)), won their second consecutive Mid-American Conference tournament game and advanced to day four of the championships with a 6-1 win over the University of Toledo, Friday May 27 at All Pro Freight Stadium.
It was the performance on the mound of the veteran Gallardo that led the way for EMU (22-35), pitching his first career complete game while only allowing one run on five hits and tallying six strikeouts. It was also the first complete game for an EMU pitcher this season.
Junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) got it done on the offensive side, going 3-for-4 with a double and home run, as well as a walk, and three RBI's. He hit his fourth home run of the season and first since May 6. It was also his second three-RBI game of the season and third three-hit game.
The first three innings went by in a breeze with both teams combining for just two hits and no runs. Gallardo had a pair of K's in the second inning, the first of which was the 100th of his career.
EMU broke the tie in the fourth in a big way with Montgomery's two-run home run. The blast to right field landed just under the scoreboard, and gave the Eagles the 2-0 lead after four innings.
The scoring continued in the fifth with some more solid hitting from the Eagles. A leadoff line drive single from sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) set up a sacrifice bunt to get him to second. The next hitter, senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.), then lined a single of his own to left center, scoring the speedy Lett from second and extending the lead to 3-0. Gallardo had his fifth consecutive scoreless frame and fourth strikeout in the fifth inning, and the score remained at 3-0 after five innings.
Eastern's bats continued to rake in the sixth inning as the Green and White sprung for two more. After back-to-back singles, Montgomery clubbed his third hit of the game, a ground rule double to right field, scoring one and putting runners on second and third. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Lett drew a walk for an RBI, giving EMU a 5-0 lead.
Gallardo had a quick sixth inning, but finally gave up a run in the seventh, allowing one to cross on a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly, making the score 5-1 into the final two innings. Despite eclipsing the 100-pitch mark, Gallardo soldiered on in the eighth, stranding a runner on second base and keeping UT off the scoreboard into the final inning.
EMU got an insurance run in the ninth with some clutch two-out hitting from redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter). With a man on third and two away, the leftfielder lined a single up the middle, plating the sixth Eagle run, and giving them a 6-1 cushion into Toledo's final turn at the dish.
Gallardo came back out for one more inning in the ninth and was a solid as in the first inning, going one-two-three with a strikeout to complete the 6-1 victory.
Eastern now gets a rematch with the top-seeded Kent State University tomorrow, May 28. First pitch from Avon is set for 1 p.m.
