Murphy Turns in a Top 15 Showing at the Rio Verde Invitational

RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished in seventh place on the final leaderboard Sunday afternoon, March 9, at the 2014 Rio Verde Invitational. On the third and final day of competition the Eagles fired a team score of 306 on the par 71, 6,209-yard Quail Run Course. EMU's three-day total of 922 (301-315-306) finished just one stroke outside of the top five as Xavier University cruised to the tournament title with a final tally of 900 (303-298-299).
Leading the way for the Green and White was freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) who carded a three-over par 74 on the final 18 holes. The Plymouth, Mich. native finished the three-day tournament at 13-over 226 (74-78-74) to place 13th. It marked her third top 15 showing in the first eight tournaments of her collegiate career.
Senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) followed Murphy, posting a 229 (76-77-76) for 261st place. Sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) was third for the Eagles recording a final round 79 giving her a three-round score of 235 (77-79-79). Rounding out the scoring for EMU was Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) and Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) who finished tied for 57th and 69th, respectively.
Montana's Tara Green won the individual title with a 219 (72-76-71) as Xavier's Shane Crutchfield finished two strokes off the pace.
EMU travels next to Hot Springs, Ark. for the UALR Golf Classic, March 24-25.
