TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's cross country team had an outstanding showing at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational, Oct. 18, earning 411 points to take 12th out of a field of 46 teams that included eight nationally-ranked programs. The Eagles were the top team from the Mid-American Conference by a wide margin, followed by the University of Akron in 26th and Ohio University with a 40th-place finish.
Once again, junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) paced the Green and White and recorded the only top-30 finish of the team, taking 28th out of 310 harriers in 24:49.5. The overall title was won by Edward Cheserek of Oregon, who was the 2013 NCAA national champion. The entire group of frontrunners had immense talent, as 17 of the top-30 finishers appeared at last year's national championships, with eight earning All-American honors.
The Eagles continued to turn in strong finishes with the members that would cross the line after Fink. Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge (Alderson Broaddus) finished 57th in 25:10.8, followed by Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) with a time of 25:12.7 for 60th. Fink, Andresson, and Bouchikhi all finished ahead of the first competitor from another MAC school, as Kyle Cochrun of Akron claimed the 62nd spot.
Rounding out the top-five for the Green and White were Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville) and John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y.-Gloversville). Witchell raced for the team for the first time of the 2014 campaign and finished 100th in 25:27.1. Knox's mark of 25:52.8 was not far ahead of Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.-River Falls), who recorded a time of 26:04.3. The final Eagle to compete in the Blue Race was Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio-River View (Wingate)), who crossed the line in 26:47.5
In the Men's Open Race, the Eagles were led by Cody Brizzolara (Maine, N.Y.-Maine-Endwell), who took 25th in 26:34.3. Five members of the Green and White competed, allowing Eastern to record a team score of 94 points for third place.
Next week, the team will host its only home meet of the season. The EMU Fall Classic will be held Friday, Oct. 24 at Hudson Mills Metro Park in Dexter, Mich. The men are slated to run at 4:30 p.m. following the women's race.
