YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The 2012 Mid-American Conference season gets underway Friday, Sept. 21, when the Eastern Michigan University soccer team treks to DeKalb, Ill. to take on Northern Illinois University. EMU (3-3-1) will finish the weekend Sunday, Sept. 23, at the defending MAC Tournament Champion University of Toledo.

Friday's contest with the Huskies begins at 4 p.m. (CDT), while Sunday's game against the Rockets is slated for a 1 p.m. (EDT) start.

SCOUTING REPORT: Northern Illinois begins conference play with a 4-3-0 record and is riding a two-match winning streak. Last season, the Eagles claimed a 1-0 decision over the Huskies to make it four wins in-a-row over their West Division foe. EMU's all-time record of 12-3-2 against NIU marks the best ledger the Eagles own against any MAC team.

After racing to the conference crown in 2011, Toledo has struggled out of the gate in 2012, going 2-6-0 in non-conference action. EMU lost by a 2-1 score to UT last season, and trails in the all-time series, 9-11-0.

THE TIME HAS COME: The Green and White will be in search of its first MAC Tournament  title since 1999 and their first regular season championship since 2003. A West Division championship would be a first for EMU since the two-division format was introduced in the 2010 season.

Head Coach Scott Hall's squad will also look to wipe away last season's conference record of 3-7-1, which was good for fifth place in the West Division.

ON POINT: Heading into the MAC season, the Green and White is near the top rankings in several key categories. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jenna O'Dell has racked up a conference-best 52 saves through seven matches for a per-game average of 7.43. Offensively, EMU is third in total points (40), tied for first in assists (18) and tied for third in goals scored (11).

TITAN-IC LETDOWN: EMU's final non-conference tilt against the University of Detroit Mercy, Sept. 13, was abruptly canceled due to travel conflicts. No makeup date was rescheduled, bringing an early end to non-conference play. Eastern Michigan and UDM had played each other in every season since the program's inception in 1995.

The Eagles finished 3-3-1 against teams outside the Mid-American Conference with wins over Butler, Lamar and IUPUI.

THE ROUNDUP: The Green and White is coming off a 1-1 weekend in which it opened up with a 2-0 shutout against IUPUI, Sept. 7, and finished with a 2-0 loss at Michigan State, Sept. 9.

Against the Jaguars, a late offensive onslaught in a six-minute span resulted in a pair of goals which lifted the EMU to a 2-0 win over IUPUI at Scicluna Field. The Eagles won their second straight match and redshirt freshman Jenna O'Dell came away with her second-career shutout.

The game remained scoreless until the 82nd minute, when a cross from Stephanie Clarke found fellow junior Cara Cutaia open in front of the net. EMU doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 88th minute, when sophomore Angela Vultaggio snuck past the IUPUI defense to seal the game for the home team.

Versus the Spartans, Eastern Michigan's defense was busy from the opening whistle, as Michigan State controlled much of the possession. After MSU scored two goals midway through the second half, the Eagles tried to fight their way back into the game to no avail as the two-game winning streak came to an end.

CUTAIA ON THE MARK: Junior midfielder Cara Cutaia scored her second goal of the season and first game-winner of the year against IUPUI. The Burlington, Ontario native has six points in her previous four games and is third on the team with seven total points.

RACK 'EM UP: With 40 points on the season after seven games, the Eagles are just 10 away from matching their output from the entire 2011 season. Entering last weekend's action, the Green and White was third in the MAC in total points, fourth in goals scored and second in assists.

Sophomore forwards Angela Vultaggio (10 points) and Bianca Rossi (eight points) lead the offensive charge, while seven additional EMU players have registered at least one point on the season.

HALL GETS OVER THE 130 MARK:  Now in his fourteenth season, Head Coach Scott Hall captured his 130th-career victory when the Eagles knocked off Lamar University, Sept. 2. Hall has an overall record of 131-104-39 since he took over the program in 1999 for an average of about 10 wins per season. He has one MAC Title (1999) to his credit as well as a regular-season championship (2003).
