EMU heads to defending MAC Champ Toledo Sunday
DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team began the 2012 Mid-American Conference season Friday afternoon, Sept. 21, with a 1-0 victory against Northern Illinois University. Sophomore Bianca Rossi scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick in the 64th minute.
The Eagles improve to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the MAC, while the Huskies fell to 4-4-0 and 0-1 in conference action. EMU has now beaten NIU in four consecutive seasons.
Northern Illinois looked to be in control of the match in the first half, outshooting EMU, 6-0. Eastern Michigan played through the wind and rain to mount several offensive attacks in the closing 45 minutes to finish the period with an even 5-5 shot total.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jenna O'Dell came up big to keep the game scoreless in the 32nd minute when Cori Frankenberg came rushing in one-on-one. Frankenberg's low shot was turned away by a sprawling O'Dell.
EMU's high-pressure attack finally paid off in the 64th minute, when NIU made an illegal play inside the 18-yard box to send Rossi to the penalty kick dot. Rossi deposited her kick past goalkeeper Amy Carr to score her fourth goal of the season and second game-winner of 2012.
O'Dell recorded her third shutout of the season and stopped a trio of NIU shots on goal. Junior Cara Cutaia registered the only other EMU shot on goal in the contest.
The Eagles continue their MAC schedule Sunday, Sept. 23, when they travel to defending MAC Tournament Champions, Toledo, for a 1 p.m. tilt.
