EAGLES CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON AT TOLEDO SATURDAY: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will close out its 2011-12 regular season with a 2 p.m. Mid-American Conference West Division tilt at the University of Toledo Saturday, March 3, in Savage Arena in Toledo, Ohio.
The Eagles, now 14-16 overall, clinched their first-ever outright Mid-American Conference West Division championship with a 54-53 win at Western Michigan Wednesday, Feb. 29.
The MAC has held divisional play since the 1997-98 season and in those 15 years the best finish ever for the Eagles prior to this year as a tie for second in the West in both 2007-08 and 2009-10.  Eastern's best MAC finish since divisional play started was a 13-5 record in 1997-98.  This year's nine wins ties the 1999-00 team for second-most wins.

STILL IN THE HUNT: With the win at Western Michigan Wednesday, Feb. 29, the Eagles remain in the hunt for a first-round bye in the upcoming FirstEnergy MAC Tournament, March 5-10. A complete rundown of the potential tournament seedings is on page four of this release.

LAMPLEY NAMED MAC WEST CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  EMU senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Co-Player of the Week for Feb. 27, 2012.  Lampley helped lead the Eagles to two West Division wins last week. The award is his second this season after capturing the weekly award Nov. 11, 2011.  He shares the honor with Toledo's Julius Brown.
The 5-foot-10 Lampley averaged 17 points, 4.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists while making 17-of-19 free throw attempts as EMU won two games.  He scored 21 points with five assists and three steals in a 48-45 win over Northern Illinois, Feb. 22.  He also made 9-of-11 free throws in that victory. Saturday, Feb. 25, at home on Senior Day, Lampley scored 13 points with five rebounds and eight assists in a 61-50 victory over Ball State.  Lampley hit all 10 free throw attempts in that contest.

THE LAST TIME VS. TOLEDO:  The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team kept a share of the Mid-American Conference West Division lead with a nail-biting 41-38 win over the University of Toledo here Saturday, Jan. 21, afternoon at the Convocation Center.
With the score tied at 36-all with 3:05 left in the game, senior guard Quintin Dailey (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheridan C.C.) hit his second consecutive three-point field goal to put the Eagles up by three, 39-36.
EMU junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) would then slam home a dunk with 2:20 left to boost EMU to a 41-36 advantage.
Toledo's Rian Pearson would cut the lead to three, 41-38, on a layup with 1:56 left and that score would hold for a final.
Toledo had one shot to tie the game with nine seconds left, but it fell short and EMU controlled the rebound and held on to the ball for the victory.
The 4-1 MAC start by Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles is the best for an EMU team since the 1996-97 squad posted a 4-1 start. EMU is 9-10 overall.
Eastern did not have a player in double figures as Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) had nine points with Harris adding eight and Matt Balkema (Roseville, Mich.-Warren Cousino) finishing with seven points and eight rebounds.
Toledo, now 9-10 overall and 1-4 in MAC action, was led by Rian Pearson with 12.
Eastern would finish the game shooting 32.6 percent, making 15-of-46 shots from the field while Toledo made just 30 percent of its attempts, hitting 15-of-50.  Eastern also held a large, 40-27, rebound advantage.

CHECKING THE SERIES:  Toledo leads, 45-43.  EMU has won the last six in a row, including a 41-38 victory earlier this season, Jan. 21, at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti.

EMU CLINCHES AT LEAST A HOME GAME IN FIRST ROUND OF TOURNEY:  With its 61-50 win over Ball State Saturday, Feb. 25, the Eagles clinched at least a first-round home game in the upcoming FirstEnergy Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Eagles secured the outright West title with a 54-53 win at Western Michigan, Feb. 29, to give them a 9-6 league mark and leaves the Eagles still vying for a first-round bye.  The top four teams in the final regular-season standings get byes for the first-round games and the top two seeds get byes all the way into the semifinal round.  Akron is assured of a first-round bye with its 12-3 record, but the rest of the seeding is uncertain.  With one game left, Buffalo could tie Akron for the top record if the Bulls win at home against Bowling Green Saturday, March 3, and the Zips lose on the road at Kent State Friday, March 2.  If that scenario happens, Buffalo would take the top spot and Akron would be second. Both of those teams would get byes all the way to the semifinal round.  That would leave seeds 3-12 up in the air until Saturday's action is completed.
This year's seeds are determined by the school's final MAC record, from 1 through 12. The division winners do not automatically receive one of the top four seeds.  The top two seeds receive a bye all the way to the semifinal rounds while seeds three and four get a first-round bye. From there, the teams seeded 5-8 will host the teams seeded 9-12 at the home sites of 5-8.
