Complete Release (.pdf)

THE WEEK AHEAD:
The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team begins the 2011 regular season with a Friday, Aug. 19 match against the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa. at 7 p.m. The Green and White meets up with the Panthers for just the second time, with EMU holding a 1-0-0 series advantage thanks to a 2-1 road victory, Aug. 27, 2004.

The Eagles then head back to the Great Lakes State for a matinee matchup with the University of Detroit Tuesday, Aug. 23. EMU leads the all-time series with Detroit, 7-5-4, but it was the Titans who escaped with a 1-0 overtime win in the last meeting, Sept. 7, 2010.

SCOUTING REPORT: Pittsburgh returns eight starters for the 2011 campaign including All-Big East Third Team members Katelyn Ruhe and Ashley Cuba. Cuba was the Panthers' leading points-getter (12) and goal scorer (6) in 2010. Ruhe, a playmaker at midfield, is coming off an 11-point season (one goal, nine assists).

The Titans are paced by sophomore stand-out Kaitlyn Quarrell and junior Nina Carter. Quarrel, a member of the Horizon League Second Team in 2010, recorded six goals and three assists for 15 points last season, while Carter posted  12 points with five goals and two assists.

EXHIBITIONERS: The Eagles played their lone preseason match of 2011 against Michigan State Saturday, Aug. 13. Though the Eagles lost, 1-0, EMU defenders played a solid game, blocking 10 of the Spartans' 29 total shots. In her first game as a collegiate athlete, freshman Angela Vultaggio  recorded three shots-one on goal. Freshmen Emily Dzik  and Bianca Rossi also cracked the starting lineup Saturday. Both EMU goalkeepers, sophomore Rachel Rye and freshman Anna Vess saw playing time and made one save apiece.

GAME ON!: As a new season of Eastern Michigan women's soccer kicks-off, players, coaches and fans are anxiously awaiting to see a revitalized Eagles lineup for the 2011 season. With the departure of several key players following the 2010 season, 2011 promises to provide an opportunity for some of EMU's young talent to step up and make immediate contributions.

Thirteenth-year Head Coach Scott Hall's squad will rely on senior leadership to propel the Eagles deep into this year's Mid-American Conference tournament. “I am excited see a mix of new and returning players,” said Hall. In addition to the team's veterans, EMU welcomes nine freshman into the fold.

The Mid-American Conference preseason poll, released Monday, Aug. 15, has the Eagles finishing fourth in the West Division, with the University of Toledo predicted to win the MAC Championship.

SEASON'S GREETINGS:
The Eagles begin the season on a six-game road swing with other stops at IUPUI (Aug. 28), Butler (Sept. 2), Oakland (Sept. 4) and Western Kentucky (Sept. 11).

Illinois State will come to Scicluna Field, Sept. 16, as the Eagles return home for one match before MAC play begins. EMU's home MAC matchups include Kent State (Sept. 30), Buffalo (Oct. 2), Miami (Oct. 9), Ball State (Oct. 21), Toledo (Oct. 23) and Central Michigan (Oct. 27).

TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADERS:
A successful 2011 campaign hinges greatly on the leadership of the four seniors: Chelsea Detrick, Julie Kaim, Amanda Marsh and Katie Marsh.

Detrick, who is coming off a nine-point season (three goals, three assists), will anchor the offense while Kaim, a second-team All-MAC selection in 2010, will be responsible for locking-out opposing attackers on defense. The Marsh sisters will patrol midfield and will contribute to numerous scoring chances throughout the season.

“For our team to be successful this year, we need to count on strong leadership from our seniors,” said Hall.

WINGED ATTACK: The Eagles' offensive charge will be led by Detrick and sophomore Stephanie Clarke.  Detrick has scored as many as 11 goals (2009) in a season and is currently eighth on the EMU all-time points list with 45 and fifth in goals scored with 19. Clarke had an impressive freshman campaign in 2010, when she earned 11 points (four goals, three assists) en route to a second team All-MAC selection and MAC All-Freshman Team nomination.

“Dietrick and Clarke are two players who will jump-start our offense and inspire some of our young talent,” said Hall.

The Eagles will also rely on several freshmen including Vultaggio and Rossi to help an offense which ranked fifth in goals last season with a 1.29 per-game average.

THAT WAS THEN: The 2010 season marked the fourth-consecutive year in which the Green and White posted a winning record (9-7-5). EMU also earned a 6-2-3 mark in the MAC including a nine-game unbeaten streak (6-0-3) to begin conference play.  This earned them the No. 4 seed and opening-round home field headed into the MAC Tournament, where they fell to Western Michigan on penalty kicks.

In her final season, Paige Sheridan led the team in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points.
