Eagles Rally Late to Earn 2-2 Tie at Pitt

Cara Cutaia scores in last-second effort to force overtime

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (EMUEagles.com)— Sophomore Cara Cutaia netted the tying goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation as the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team opened the regular season with a 2-2 tie against the University of Pittsburgh Friday evening, Aug. 19. Cutaia finished the night with three points and freshman Angela Vultaggio also added a goal for the Eagles.
The game marked the inaugural match at Pitt's brand new Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Vultaggio started the scoring in 70th minute when she received a pass from Cutaia and zipped a 20-yard shot past Pitt goalkeeper Kristina Rioux. The goal was the first of Vultaggio's collegiate career.
The EMU lead would be short lived as Pitt's Katelyn Ruhe fired a shot from the corner past sophomore netminder Rachel Rye to tie the contest at one in the 74th minute. Pitt struck again in the 81st minute when Ashley Cuba connected on a crossing pass from Ruhe and sent the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
With seconds remaining in regulation, freshman Emily Dzik found an open Cutaia who sent a looping shot over Rioux's head to send a jubilant EMU squad into overtime.
Neither team was able to break the deadlock in 30 minutes of extra play, leaving each team with a 0-0-1 record on the season.
Rye made 10 saves in goal for the Eagles, who fired nine shots on the Pitt goalkeeper. Vultaggio, Cutaia, and sophomore Stephanie Clarke each registered a pair of shots on goal.
The Green and White will play game two of a six-match road stint Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 4 p.m. against the University of Detroit.
