Eagles Get Past Matadors to Win Rainbow Wahine Classic Finale

HONOLULU, Hawai'i (EMUEagles.com) – A hot-shooting first half paced the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team as it registered a 79-68 victory over Cal State Northridge in the last of three games in three days at the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic, finishing 2-1 with the win Sunday, Nov. 21.
The Eagles started the game with four straight made baskets while hitting nine of their first 10 shots en route to a 66.7 percent (20-for-30) shooting first half of play. Junior Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) connected on her first eight shots, going 4-for-4 from three-point range to tally 23 points before halftime. She would go on to finish with a team-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, 4-of-8 from long range and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.
CSUN's Violet Alama led all scorers with 32 points, adding 11 rebounds to record a double-double for the Matadors. Senior Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) posted another all-around effort with 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for her second double-double of the season. With the win, EMU moves to 3-2 on the season while Cal State Northridge falls to 0-4.

EMU would build a commanding, 44-24, lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first half after Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) stole the ball and turned it into two points on the other end. The Eagles tallied 14 fast break points in the first half alone and 16 for the game. They would lead by as many as 21 points in the first half before taking a 49-31 lead into locker room.
Cal State Northridge chipped away in the second half as Jasmine Erving cut the deficit to 11 points to make it 57-46 with 12:28 left in the game. It would get as close as nine points late in the contest as the Honolulu native, Alama, willed the Matadors with 16 second half points, but the Eagles got it done down the stretch with clutch free throw shooting to seal the win.
EMU will depart Honolulu with a 2-1 record in the Rainbow Wahine Classic with its lone loss coming to tournament champion Oregon State in the opener Friday, Nov. 19. The Green and White will be back in action Friday, Nov. 26, when they return home take on Cornell at the Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m.
