YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team jumped out to an early double-digit lead and never trailed on the way to a 66-41 non-conference win over a visiting Cornell University team here Friday, Nov. 26, in the Convocation Center.
The win helps the Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season while Cornell drops to 1-4.
Eastern was led by junior Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) with 16 points while junior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and senior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) scored 12 each. Senior Kristin Thomas (Winter Park, Fla.-Edgewater-Hillsborough C.C.) and freshman Olivia Fouty (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Northview) grabbed six rebounds apiece.
Cornell was led by sophomore Clare Fitzpatrick with 12 points.
Eastern shot 41.1 percent from the field (23-of-56) while holding Cornell to just 28.3 percent (15-of-53) and harassing the Big Reds into 26 turnovers.
The Eagles stormed out of the gate, racing to an 11-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game with James accounting for six of those points.
The Big Red would come back to pull within eight several times in the early stages before the Eagles responded with a 9-0 mini-run to take a 28-11 lead with 5:15 left in the half.
Cornell would go on from that point in the game to out-score the Eagles, 7-6, over the final five minutes, but Schrock hit a layup at the buzzer to give EMU a 34-18 halftime lead.
The Eagles closed out the half shooting 40 percent from the field, connecting on 12-of-30 field-goal attempts while limiting Cornell to just 26.1 percent (6-of-23) field goals while also forcing the Big Reds into 16 first-half turnovers.
Despite a slow second-half start by both teams, the Eagles managed to race to a 20-point lead, 43-23, on a layup by India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) with 14:56 left in the game.
Eastern kept the lead in double figures through the middle stages of the second half and after taking a 54-34 advantage with 5:50 left on the clock, Cornell would score five unanswered points to cut the deficit to 54-39, with 3:56 remaining.
Redditt would turn in two straight three-point plays, both on layups followed by foul shots, to move the lead above 20 and the Eagles cruised from that point.
Eastern will take its 4-2 record into a Dec. 1 date at the University of Missouri-Kansas City followed by a Dec. 3 game at Missouri State.
