KANSAS CITY, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team started a two-game swing through the Show Me State with a 64-58 non-conference victory over the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Wednesday evening, Dec. 1, here at the Swinney Recreation Center.

The Eagles led by as many as 21 points in the second half before the host Kangaroos began chipping away to get within two, 60-58, in the final minute. However, senior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnatti, Ohio-Purcell Marion) hit a pair of free throws with 22 seconds to play to seal the six-point victory.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season, while UMKC drops to 3-4.

Huntley led the offensive attack, going 7-for-13 from the floor for a total of 19 point. She also registered five steals and four assists in a winning effort for the Green and White. In her return to her hometown, junior Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) nearly posted a double-double, finishing with a season-best 19 points and nine rebounds. Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) rounded out the Eagles' offensive firepower with a 16 point effort. Defensively, senior Kristin Thomas (Winter Park, Fla.-Hillsborough C.C.) recorded two blocks and paced the Green and White with her season-high 10 boards.

It would be a back-and-fourth battle to open the contest with the sides exchanging the lead over the first seven minutes. EMU would finally take over the lead for good at the 12 minute mark thanks to a Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth,Ohio-Wadsworth) layup. Sam Sikkink would do her best to keep things close, draining three-straight threes to keep the `Roos within five points, 25-20, with 6:14 left in the period.

The Eagles would string together an 8-0 run to jump ahead by 12 points and were able to head into the locker room with a 36-22 advantage. The Green and White shot a 51.6 percent clip in for opening stanza compared to just 28.1 percent by the Kangaroos. However, the real difference in the first half proved to be the eight steals by the Eagles compared to UMKC's one.

Eastern Michigan appeared to be running away with the game in the early goings of the second half, jumping out to a 21-point lead, 51-30, with 13:42 left in the game. However, UMKC slowly chipped away at the lead and were able to get within 10 points, 55-45, with 8:12 remaining.

The margin got even smaller when Mariah Davis and Eilise O'Connor each connected on a pair of free throws to make it 60-58 with 41 seconds to play. With the clock winding down the Kangaroos were forced to foul to get the ball back. Huntley calmly hit two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to jump ahead, 62-58.

The `Roos had time for one last play but did not get a good look at the basket and a missed long three-pointer which gave James an open opportunity for an easy layup to make it 64-58.

The Eagles will continue their two-game road swing Friday, Dec. 3, when they face off against the Bears of Missouri State University at JQH Arena in Springfield, Mo.. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
