YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — A suffocating full-court defense and some timely shooting added up to an 84-60 exhibition game win for the Eastern Michigan University Eagles over the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals here Friday, Oct. 29, night in the Convocation Center. The exhibition game was the first action of the season for EMU.
Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's Eagles posted 26 steals and held the visitors to just 32 percent shooting from the field, as the Cardinals made just 16-of-50 field-goal attempts. The Eagles connected on 32-of-76 shots for 42.1 percent. Saginaw Valley won the battle of the boards, 52-45.
EMU had four players in double figures in the 24-point win. Senior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Pursell Marian) and junior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) led the Eagles with 18 points each while junior forward Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) added 13 and freshman Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) chipped in 11.
Saginaw Valley was led by Jasmine Kennedy with 12 points while Grace Herzog added 11.
After a slow start by both teams, the Eagles caught fire, breaking from an 11-7 lead to a 20-7 advantage at the 8:53 mark after three consecutive three pointers in just 22 seconds, two from Huntley and one from James.
Eastern would see that early 13-point lead shrink to eight, 29-21, with 2:55 left in the half on a three pointer by Marah Kyle.
The Eagles would rally down the stretch, however, taking a 38-24 lead into intermission.
Eastern opened the second half with a scoring flurry, running off seven unanswered points in the first three minutes to take a 47-24 lead at the 17:51 mark.
The Eagles would increase their lead to 35, 68-33, on a layup by Watkins with 10:06 left in the game and the home team would mass substitute the rest of the way while cruising to the 24-point win.
Eastern will play another exhibition before opening the regular season, hosting Northwood University Thursday, Nov. 4.
