NORTHVILLE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team picked up where it left off last season, as the Eagles placed five runners in the top 10, including a first place finish by senior Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), at the 23rd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational to take home the title with just 19 total points.

Vollmar paced the Eagles on the day, finishing first overall with a time of 19:54. Vollmar bested former EMU standout runner Corey Nowitzke (unattached) by 10 seconds to take home the title. Former EMU runner Neal Naughton also raced well, finishing third with a time of 20:28.

"I'm pleased with our opening meet of the season starting very significantly with Curtis Vollmar's winning effort,” said EMU head coach John Goodridge. “There was never a doubt in my mind that we would not be well represented in the EMU number one man position and Curtis addressed that issue for us immediately."

Behind Vollmar was redshirt freshman James Hughes (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester) who finished fifth with a time of 20:38. Rounding out the top 10 was senior R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale), who placed seventh with a time of 20:47, while junior Matt Hammersmith (Wolcott, Mich.-Prairie Heights) and sophomore Andrew Pfeiffer (Clarence, N.Y.-Clarence) placed eighth and ninth, respectively.

"Likewise I'm pleased with the rest of the squad which ran in very new team positions including James who was wearing the EMU uniform for the first time,” Goodridge added. "This was a hilly course, the grass was a bit rough and temperature was warm, so we raced conservatively."

Already off to a stellar start in 2009, the Eagles now prepare for the Michigan State University Spartan Open, Friday, Sept. 18, in East Lansing, Mich.
