Notre Dame Invitational on the Horizon for Eagles

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – With two races under its belt so far this season, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team treks to South Bend, Ind. on Friday, Oct. 2, for the 54th running of the Notre Dame Invitational. The men's gold division race is slated to begin at 2:45 p.m. at Burke Golf Course.

The Eagles have competed in the Notre Dame Invitational for the past three seasons, their best finish coming in 2006 when they took seventh as a team with 183 total points.

Last season at Notre Dame, the Eagles finished 10th as a team with 296 total points. Then senior Josh Karanja led the way for the Eagles, taking 10^th with a time of 23:51, which was his fastest time ever at that point in his collegiate career.

Senior Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) placed 72nd overall at the Notre Dame Invitational last year with a time of 24:49, while Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) placed 154th with a time of 25:46. They are the only two EMU runners on this year's squad to have run in the Notre Dame Invitational.

Vollmar has led the Eagles in both races so far this season, as the senior captain finished first overall at the 23rd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational with a time of 19:54 – the fastest time in any race in EMU men's cross country history. At the Spartan Invitational, Sept. 18, Vollmar took fifth with a time of 24:58.

After competing in the Notre Dame Invitational, the Eagles are back in action Oct. 9 for the Michigan Intercollegiate in Grand Rapids, Mich. Last season, the Eagles placed second as a team at the Michigan Intercollegiate, as R.P. White's (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) sixth place finish with a time of 25:57 was the best among all EMU harriers.
