Men's Cross Country Takes Third at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a runner-up performance by senior captain Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team placed third overall as a team with 93 points at the 54th running of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Oct. 2, at Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

 

Vollmar continued to build off his already impressive senior campaign, as he finished second overall with a time of 24:40, just behind DePaul's Matt Graham, who took home the title with a time of 24:34. In three races this season, Vollmar has finished first, fifth, and second with today's finish.

"I'm quite pleased with the things we accomplished at Notre Dame as well as what we accomplished in training this past week," said head coach John Goodridge. "We have many good things to build off going into our next competition."

 

Senior captain R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) had a solid performance of his own, taking 10th with a time of 25:12. White finished just one second behind UW-Steven Point's Joel Heroux and Grand Valley State's Anthony Witt, who finished eighth and ninth with a time of 25:11.

 

Junior Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich.-Prairie Heights) was the next Eagle harrier to cross the finish line, placing 12th overall with a time of 25:17, just five seconds out of a top-10 finish.

 

True freshman Terefe Ejigu (Mount Cook, Wellington -Wellington-New Zealand) had a solid race in his EMU debut, taking 34th overall with a time of 25:39.

 

Sophomore Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview) and redshirt freshman James Hughes (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester) were the next two Eagles to cross the finish line, as they finished 37th and 38th with a time of 25:44.

 

Sophomore Josh Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic Central-St. Francis) rounded out the top 40 at the Notre Dame Invitational, placing 40th overall with a time of 25:50.

 

The Eagles are back in action Friday, Oct. 9, when they head to Grand Rapids, Mich. to compete in the Michigan Intercollegiate. The race is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
