Stephanie Jennings was named as the seventh Head Women’s Golf Coach at Eastern Michigan University on Sept. 7, 2018. Jennings starts her sixth season at EMU in 2023-24.
The first foray into the college coaching scene, but Jennings is no stranger to amateur golf having been employed for 13 years at various levels of the golf industry along with her own collegiate career. A native of Pemberville, Ohio, Jennings played in 82 rounds for the Eagles between 1996 and 2000. She tallied a 79.7 scoring average with nine top-five finishes and 17 top-10 showings during her EMU career.
Under Jennings’ leadership, the EMU women’s golf team has consistently demonstrated impressive performances. In the 2022-23 season, her squad achieved the 10th-lowest four-player team scoring average in the program’s history, recording an average of 308.4. The team secured four top-five finishes, including a notable runner-up showing at the Shirley Spork Invitational from Oct. 3-4, 2022. The Eagles displayed their finest golfing skills during crucial moments, finishing third at both the Jan Weaver Invitational, April 3-4, 2023, and the Lady Jaguar Invitational,April 15-16, 2023.
Playing an underclassmen lineup in 2021-22, EMU finished the year with the eighth-lowest team scoring average in program history at 307.5. Overall, Eastern Michigan won three tournaments this season, including a championship showing at the Lady Jaguar Invitational, April 16-17. EMU has also hoisted the trophy at the Golden Grizzly Invitational, Sept. 26-27, 2021, and the Shirley Spork Invitational, Oct. 4-5, 2021. It was just the fifth time (2006-07, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2019-20, and 2021-22) in program history that the squad has won at least three events during a single season.
In 2020-21, a heavily-freshmen comprised team posted the 16th lowest four-player team scoring average in program history at 313.6. Overall, EMU finished in the top-five at a trio of tournaments this season, including a runner-up showing at the Akron Invitational. Individually, Olivia Loberg led the team with an average of 75.78, while freshman Anna Watson followed with a 78.72 season average.
In 2019-20, Jennings helped the Eagles win three tournaments with a scoring average of 304.85, taking home the title at the Shirley Spork Invitational, the MAC Fall Preview, and the Low Country Invitational. It marked the first time since 2011-12 and just the fourth time (2006-07, 2007-08, 2011-12, and 2019-20) in program history that the squad has won at least three events during a single-season. Furthermore, EMU posted the lowest 36-hole tournament score (585) and finished just one shot shy of the 18-hole mark with a 287 in the final round of the year at the Low Country Invitational, March 3.
EMU finished the shortened-season ranked 170th by GolfStat, as the squad recorded the second-best team scoring average in program history (304.9). Senior Julia Stevenson led the way with an average of 75.8 and three top-10 showings, while junior Preaw Sripatrprasite followed closely with a 75.9 and three top-10 showings.
Part of the inaugural recruiting class for the EMU women’s golf program, Jennings was the 1998 Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Year before an official league championship was held, and then followed it up by collecting Second Team All-MAC honors in 1999 and First Team All-MAC accolades in 2000. At the 2000 MAC Championships, Jennings finished fourth as a senior with a final score of 226 (78-75-73) as the team recorded a third-place showing.
The medalist at the 1999 Lady Gopher Invitational, Jennings collected honors off the course as a 1998 Academic All-MAC honoree as well as a 1999 Division I Scholar by the National Golf Coaches Association. For her efforts, she was selected to participate in the 1999 LPGA Jamie Farr Kroger Classic in Sylvania, Ohio. She also took part in numerous amateur tournaments, including a 10th-place finish at the 2002 Michigan Women’s Open and the 1998 and 1999 U.S. Women’s Amateur Publinks Championships.
Following graduation, Jennings began working as an assistant golf professional at Lakelands Country Club in Brighton, Mich. There she became involved with the Michigan PGA’s Assistant’s Association and volunteered to be the group’s secretary in 2002. From there she moved on to an assistant position with Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, Mich.
From 2006-11, Jennings was the Director of Golf Programs with the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA). During her time at the EWGA, she led the EWGA Championship to a record participation year and earned an ING Industry Honors Award in Tournament Service.
In 2012, Jennings was hired as the director of communications/player development coordinator for the Middle Atlantic Section of the PGA. She returned to Michigan in 2015 as the Director of Player Development for Golf Digest’s 42nd best public golf course in the country, Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club, and sister courses Pine Trace Golf Club and Cherry Creek Golf Club.
Jennings had been the Assistant PGA Professional at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville, Mich. In that role, she helped increase women’s golf participation at the club by 35 percent by creating a welcome to golf program for new female golfers.
Jennings earned her class A membership from the PGA of America in 2007. In 2020, Jennings became the first female officer elected to the Michigan PGA Board of Directors. She will serve as the Section’s Secretary.
Jennings earned cum laude recognition upon graduation from Eastern Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2000.
