Blackwell scored her 31st hat trick and the 150th goal of her career in the road loss

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team fell in its season-opening game at Marquette University, 20-9, Friday, Feb. 6, in a game that saw several scoring runs in a fast-paced contest played inside the Valley Fields Dome in Milwaukee, Wis. Mackenzie Blackwell led the way for the Eagles (0-1) as she tallied four goals for the 31st hat trick of her career that included her 150th career score, but it was not enough as the host Golden Eagles (1-0) used runs of three, three, four, and six goals to take the victory.

How It Happened
The first quarter featured several runs as the hosts jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before the Eagles responded with four consecutive goals for a 4-3 lead. On the Eastern run, Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) hit Emerson Henry (Ashburn, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) with a feed that she finished before Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) scored a pair of goals around a Stella Burke (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter's Catholic Secondary) strike. Marquette responded with three goals of its own to reclaim a 6-4 lead before Grollman scored her first to halt the run. The Golden Eagles would add two more to close out the first quarter that featured 13 goals and the hosts on top, 8-5.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 9-5 at the start of the second before Mak Grisinger (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington/Central Michigan) tallied her first career goal despite the Eagles playing one man down as Katheryn Wilson (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) assisted on the goal. MU responded with another run, this time scoring four more to build a 13-7 lead before Grisinger netted her second to cut back into the deficit. But Marquette closed out the half with four more goals to put a running clock on as the hosts took a 17-7 lead into the break.

Marquette added two goals in the third for the only scoring of the stanza to send the game into the fourth where Blackwell took a pass from Grollman just 16 seconds into the period and found the back of the net. The goal gave Blackwell her 31st career hat trick and made her the first player in program history to score 150 goals in a career at Eastern. Blackwell added her fourth of the day with just under seven to play as Erin Humphrey (Auburn Hills, Mich./Troy) recorded her first career point as she assisted Blackwell on a breakaway as she beat the keeper to make it 19-9 in favor of MU before the hosts would add one more to bring about the final score.

Individual Notes
» Mackenzie Blackwell finished with four goals to post the 31st hat trick of her career and mark the 20th time in 50 career games she scored at least four goals for the Eagles. Additionally, three of those 31 hat tricks have come against Marquette as she scored three in 2024 and added five last year. She scored two in the 2023 game to give her 14 goals against MU in four games.
» With her third goal of the game, Mackenzie Blackwell brought her career total to 150 goals, making her the first player in program history to reach the milestone.
» Mak Grisinger scored the first two goals of her collegiate career and made her first score memorable as it came with the Eagles down one player. The man-down score tied her the single-game record and made her just the fifth different Eagle to score when down one player. Grisinger, who recorded her first multi-point game as well, scored two goals on two shots.
» Tracy Grollman finished the game with four points on one goal and three assists, marking the eighth time in her career she has tallied four or more points in a game. Her three assists tied for the seventh-most in a single game in program history while marking the eighth time in her career she dished out at least three helpers in a single game.
» Stella Burke tallied two points on one goal and one assist, marking the first time in her career she has posted one of each category in the same game. The two points tied her career high which she set with two goals scored against Youngstown State, March 23, 2025.
» Erin Humphrey recorded her first career point as she assisted on a Mackenzie Blackwell goal late in the game. The defender added two ground balls and one caused turnover, both of which tied her career highs.
» Payton Bloedow (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake/Stony Brook) broke or tied two career highs in the game as she recorded five ground balls and two caused turnovers. The ground ball total surpassed the three she recorded at Michigan (April 2, 2025) while the caused turnovers tied her previous best set at Robert Morris (March 16, 2025) last year.
» Three players made their debuts with the Eagles as freshmen Ella Toth (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and Emma Reichert (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) each saw action while senior transfer Sanai James (Abingdon, Md./St. Timothy's School/Delaware State), who played the last three years at Delaware State, recorded one ground ball and one caused turnover.

Team Notes
» Eastern Michigan fell to 0-1 while Marquette moved to 1-0 on the year.
» The Eagles are 0-4 all-time in their season-opening game and 0-4 in their first road game of the season.
» The 20 goals surrendered mark just the third time in program history the Eastern defense has allowed 20+ goals in a contest and the first since falling to No. 5 Michigan, 20-4, April 3, 2024. The first instance also stands as the most allowed as EMU fell at No. 7 Notre Dame, 21-6, in the 2024 season opener (Feb. 9, 2024).
