Blackwell nets a hat trick while Schwab collects three assists in the loss
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- Mackenzie Blackwell recorded her 25th career multiple-goal game, Avery Schwab handed out three assists, and Maddie Porter tallied 11 saves, but it was not enough as the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team fell at No. 11 University of Notre Dame, 17-7, Feb. 15, inside the Loftus Sports Center in South Bend, Ind. The Eagles (0-2) also received two goals from Tracy Grollman against the Fighting Irish (2-1).
How It Happened
The teams traded goals to open the game with the scored tied, 2-2, with 9:45 remaining in the first as Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern), who was assisted by Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent), and Grollman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School), with a pass from Schwab (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Scioto), tallied the first two goals, respectively. From there, however, the hosts ran off four consecutive goals for a 6-2 advantage before Katheryn Wilson (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek) scored a woman-up goal to halt the run. UND would add one more goal to take a 7-3 lead after one.
The Fighting Irish scored the first two goals of the second quarter to build their lead to 9-3 before Blackwell netted a woman-up goal on an assist from Stella Burke (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter's Catholic Secondary). The hosts added one more score to send the game to halftime with the Eagles trailing, 10-4.
Similar to the second, the third opened with the Fighting Irish scoring the first four goals to extend their lead to 14-4 before Grollman, who was again assisted by Schwab, netted her second and Ab. Alderman scored her first to make it 14-6. UND would add one final goal in the third for a 15-6 score through three. Only three goals were scored in the fourth with UND netting the first two before Blackwell, on a pass from Schwab, scored her third of the game to bring about the 17-7 final.
Game Notes
» Mackenzie Blackwell posted the 25th multiple-goal game of her career and her 19th hat trick as she finished the game with three goals. She also added a team-high seven draw controls, marking the 15th time in her career the junior has won six or more draw controls in a single game.
» Tracy Grollman recorded her two goals of the season and her first multiple-goal game since she scored three at Howard, Feb. 25, 2024. Grollman has now scored multiple goals in seven games in her EMU career.
» Avery Schwab handed out three assists, one shy of her career high, to tie for the fifth-most in a single game in program history. Schwab has twice recorded four assists and three helpers on four occasions in her career.
» Abby Alderman scored one goal and added one assist for two points against Notre Dame. It marked back-to-back games in which she scored one goal and added one assist and the eighth time in her career. Alderman, who recorded her 14th career multiple-point game, added three draw controls.
» Katheryn Wilson scored on a free-position attempt to give her five goals this year, which ranks second only to Blackwell. Additionally, she remained perfect from the fan as she is now 3-of-3 this season in free-position shots.
» Maddie Porter (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) stopped 11 shots on the day to mark her second consecutive game with 11+ saves to open the season after halting 18 against San Diego State (Feb. 9). Porter, the NCAA leader in ground balls, collected five more against Notre Dame to bring her average to 6.0.
