BACK AT THE OLD PLACE
Multiple individuals from the Eastern program are returning to Canisius Friday. In three seasons as the Golden Griffins' head coach, Nusseibeh helped resurrect a program that combined for five wins in the two seasons prior to her arrival into a 17-victory campaign in 2023-24. The Golden Griffins' 17 wins were the most since the 2008-09 season and it marked the school's first season with double-digit wins since 2018-19.
On the court, both Sisi Eleko and Brooklyn Thrash played for Canisius under Nusseibeh. Eleko earned All-MAAC First Team honors in 2023-24 and was named to the All-MAAC Championship Team after earning MAAC All-Rookie honors in 2022-23. Individually, Eleko set the program record for rebounds by a sophomore and ranked second all-time for rebounds in a single season with 328. Eleko led the MAAC in both points-per-game (15.9) and rebounds-per-game (10.6).
Coaches Shareese Ulis, Meg Cunningham, Kayla Jackson, and Alexis Mesuch all crossed paths with Nusseibeh at Canisius. Ulis and Cunnigham served as assistants on her staff while Mesuch acted as a student manager, and Jackson played under Nusseibeh her first two seasons in western New York.
ALL-TIME AGAINST CANISIUS
The Eagles and Golden Griffins are meeting for the ninth time, as EMU holds a 6-2 record against Canisius and a 2-1 record when facing it on the road. Eastern has taken the last four games, marking the longest winning streak in the series as the teams last met in 2011-12, a 65-53 road win for EMU.
ALL-TIME AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE
EMU is 1-17 all-time against Michigan State and 0-10 on the road including last season's 95-49 defeat at the hands of the Spartans. EMU has dropped the previous six games in the series as its lone win over MSU came Dec. 3, 2000, a 66-59 over the Spartans at the women's basketball showcase in Grand Rapids, Mich.
LAST TIME AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE
Eastern Michigan dropped its road opener at Michigan State, 95-46, Nov. 11, 2024. Sisi Eleko delivered 25 points and 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double, and Olivia Westphal hit four threes. EMU scored 25 in the first half, the most any team had managed against MSU to that point.
LAST WIN OVER MSU
Eastern Michigan posted a 66-59 victory over Michigan State, Dec. 3, 2000, at the Women's College Basketball Showcase in Grand Rapids, the program's only win over the Spartans. EMU erased an early deficit with six first-half threes and carried that momentum into the second half. A 7-0 surge put the Eagles ahead for good. Dru Bishop scored 17 to pace all players, and Stephanie Smiley finished the game with four late free throws.
DÉJÀ VU
Interestingly enough, the last time EMU played at Canisius in 2011, the squad's next contest was also on the road at Michigan State.
GOING FOR A BIG ONE
Eastern is looking for its first ranked win in program history as it has previously been 0-18 against ranked opponents.
MITTEN MEETINGS
The Eagles are 172-169 all-time against teams from the Mitten State. The series with the Spartans (1-17) is the fifth-most played in program history and the third-most against a non-conference foe behind Detroit Mercy (15-17) and Michigan (9-17).
ALL-TIME VS. THE BIG TEN
Eastern is 14-52 all-time against the current lineup of Big Ten institutions with a large majority of those games being played against Michigan State (1-17) and Michigan (9-17). The Eagles have also played Illinois (0-5), Indiana (0-2), Maryland (0-1), Minnesota (0-1), Northwestern (2-2), Ohio State (1-2), Purdue (0-3), Washington (0-2), and Wisconsin (1-0).
CLOSE CONNECTION
The Eastern Michigan and Michigan State programs each were once guided by Suzy Merchant, who spent 28 years coaching women's basketball at the collegiate level, where she built a 528-306 record. After starting her career at Saginaw Valley, Merchant was hired by EMU and spent nine seasons with the Eagles (1998-99 through 2006-07), during which posted a program-record 147 wins. She was then hired away by Michigan State, where she posted a record of 327-186 from 2007-08 through 2022-23.
COMMON BONDS
Eastern Michigan's matchup with Michigan State features strong ties between the programs. EMU Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh spent three seasons on the Bowling Green State University bench from 2013-16. She helped guide the Falcons to a 30-5 record and a MAC regular season title in 2014 while recruiting and developing five All-MAC players. On the opposite sideline, former BGSU Head Coach Robyn Fralick now leads MSU. She rebuilt the Falcons across five seasons with 88 wins, three postseason trips, and the 2021 MAC Coach of the Year award. Her tenure included a 31-win campaign and a WNIT Fab Four appearance in 2023.
LAST TIME OUT
Eastern dropped its MAC-SBC Challenge season opener at Louisiana Monroe, 80-71, Nov. 3. Senior Sisi Eeko paced the Eagles with 24 points, the second most in the MAC, and seven rebounds.
BIG FRESHMAN DEBUT: PEYTON HILL
Freshman Peyton Hill had a strong performance in her first collegiate game, scoring 15 points while shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line with four assists and three rebounds against Louisiana Monroe, Nov. 3. Her 15 points rank second in the MAC among freshmen this season and her eight made free throws tie for the highest total in the nation. Additionally, Hill's 15 points were the most from an EMU freshman in their NCAA debut since Courtnie Lewis scored 18 in her NCAA debut against Florida A&M, Nov. 10, 2017.
PELKA FROM DOWNTOWN
Freshman Oliwia Pelka made her NCAA debut against the WarHawks, Nov. 3, shooting 3-for-4 from the three-point line. Her 75% clip ranks second in the MAC as her three made three pointers are the most in the conference.
MONEY FROM THE LINE
Eastern shot 83.3% (20-for-24) from the free-throw line against Louisiana Monroe, Nov. 3, a figure that ranks inside the program top 20 for a single game. The clips stands first in the MAC as EMU's 20 made free throws slot third.
EMU DEBUTS
Fernanda Ovalle, Ainhoa Cea, Peyton Hill, Alli Zajac, Artemis Kouki, Oliwia Pelka, and Sarah Rekowksi each made their respective EMU debuts in the season opener against Louisiana Monroe, Nov. 3.
ELEKO PRESEASON ALL-MAC FIRST TEAM
Senior Sisi Eleko was named Preseason All-MAC First Team, Oct. 21. The 2024-25 All-MAC Second Team selection led the MAC with 14 double-doubles last season and was the only player to average one in the conference. She also paced the conference with 10.1 rebounds per game, becoming the only MAC player to average double-digit boards, and slotted second with 17.9 points per game.
ELEKO PROGRAM DOUBLE-DOUBLES
Sisi Eleko's 14 double-doubles are tied for ninth on the program's all-time list (since 1997) with Stephanie Smiley (1998-02). Should Eleko add another double-double against ULM, she would total 15 and sit in a tie for sixth with three players, including Natachia Watkins (2010-14), Patrice McKinney (2004-06), and Cassie Schrock (2007-11).
ELEKO'S 2024-25 NATIONAL RANKINGS
On the national level, Sisi Eleko finished the 2024-25 regular season ranked 21st in the NCAA in defensive rebounds per game (7.3), 23rd in rebounds per game (10.1), 26th in double-doubles (14), 36th in points per game by value (17.9), and 45th in total rebounds (283).
ELEKO ON THE PROGRAM LEADERBOARDS
Sisi Eleko finished her first season in Ypsilanti with 500 points and 283 rebounds, both of which held historical significance. Her 500 points made her just the 13th player in program history to score 500+ points in a season while making her the fifth to do so in her junior campaign. Additionally, the 283 rebounds ranked third on the program's single-season list with only Felicia Hines (1984-85) and Suzanne Huff (1980-81) posting more with 292 and 286, respectively. Her season averages of 17.9 points and 10.1 rebounds made her just the third player to average a double-double in a season for the Eagles. The first was Hines, who averaged 12.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game in the 1984-85 season, with the most recent addition to the ledger coming in 2020-21 when Ce'Nara Skanes averaged 16.0 points and 10.9 rebounds.
SHORT HISTORY ON NUSSEIBEH
Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh is entering her second year at the helm of the program. Nusseibeh came to Ypsilanti following three years as the head coach at Canisius. A rising coaching star while in the MAAC, Nusseibeh is no stranger to the MAC as she previously served as an assistant coach at Miami (2019-21) and Bowling Green (2013-16). A 2009 graduate of American, Nusseibeh got her start as a graduate assistant at Cincinnati (2009-11) before coaching stints at Holy Cross (2011-13), and Manhattan (2016-19), where she was tabbed as the associate head coach.
With a record of 32-60 with the Golden Griffins, Nusseibeh built a team that went from six wins her first year to 17 in her third and did so by bringing in strong talent. Both Athina Lexa (2021-22) and Sisi Eleko (2022-23) were unanimous selections to the All-MAAC Rookie Teams before Lexa was named the 2023-24 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year and Eleko was the lone unanimous All-MAAC First Team selection.
