Gymnastics Set for Home Opener Against CMU Friday

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team opens its home season by playing host to in-state rivals and Mid-American Conference foes, Central Michigan University, Friday, Jan. 19 in a dual meet inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.

KEY EAGLE: Awarded after every contest, the Eastern Michigan gymnastics coaches choose one gymnast to anoint as that meet's Key Eagle. Freshman Jackie Patterson earned the honor after an impressive outing at the University of Minnesota, Jan. 13. The rookie recorded a 9.875 on beam, good for the top-spot among Eagles and second overall.
EAGLES IN THE TWIN CITY: EMU competed against Big Ten member, the University of Minnesota, Saturday, Jan. 13, on the road. The Eagles finished with a season-high 194.900 team score behind the Gophers' 196.300. Eight Eagles recorded season-highs in the meet, topping their previous scores set at the Western Michigan University dual meet, Jan. 7.
The Eagles began the meet once more on bars where the team earned a 48.475, an improvement from the season opener at WMU (48.025). Raisa Boris and Trinity Macy led the event for EMU, with each scoring a 9.800 that tied for fourth overall on uneven bars.
On Eastern's second rotation, the Green and White scored 48.650 on vault. Boris recorded a 9.825 on the apparatus for the top spot among Eagles and tied with one other Gopher for the overall top spot in the event.
EMU's third rotation took the team to the floor where the Eagles grabbed a 48.800 event score. Five Gophers took the top-five spots leaving Boris' 9.825 with a sixth place finish on floor.
Eastern Michigan finished the meet on beam with an improved season-high 48.975 event score, topping the 48.350 posted at WMU. Freshman Jacquelyn Patterson led the charge for the Eagles on the apparatus, earning a career-high 9.875, good for second place overall.
HEADER: Freshman Abby Brushwood recorded a career-high on floor in just her second meet with the Eagles with a score of 9.800, beating her previous score of 9.350. Brushwood placed seventh on the event which is also her highest placement of her career.
TRINITY MACY: The senior out of Rowlett Texas, Trinity Macy, recorded two season highs at Minnesota, Jan. 13. Her first was on bars with a 9.800 tying for fourth, as well as on beam with 9.750, tying for tenth place. Macy greatly improved her score from the Western Michigan meet, Jan. 7, where she scored 8.500 on beam. Her score improved by almost one whole point.
JORDAN JANKOWSKI: Another Eagle greatly improved their score on bars against the Gophers, Jan. 13. Senior Jordan Jankowski scored a season high 9.700. Her score bettered by 1.525 from the Western Michigan meet, Jan. 7, the biggest individual improvement for the Eagles this season.
DANIELS DEBUTS: Genae Daniel marked her debut on a new aparatus against while in Minneapolis. The freshman out of Indianapolis, Ind. performed her routine for the first time on bars with a score of 9.550.
EAGLES EXCEL ON EVENTS: The Eagles improved on three out of the four events in Minneapolis. They scored 48.475 on bars and 48.800 on floor. Their biggest upgrade was on beam where they beat their previous event score of 48.350 at Western Michigan, Jan. 7, with a 48.975.
JACQUELYN PATTERSON: The Ohio native Jacquelyn Patterson recorded a career and season high against Minnesota, Jan. 13, when she scored a 9.875 which earned her a second place finish on the apparatus. A nice upgrade for the freshman who scored a 9.150 at the previous meet against Western Michigan, Jan. 7.
ON THE HORIZON: EMU continues their home stay with their next meet taking place on Sunday, Jan. 21. The Eagles will take on the Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils at the George Gervin GameAbove Center. The competition will begin at 1p.m.
CAREER-HIGH RAI: Raisa Boris' all-around score of 39.425 at WMU, Jan. 7, marked a career-high for the senior. She previously recorded a 39.350 at Bowling Green State University, one year ago, March 12. Additionally, the Minnesota native earned a career-high 9.875 on vault, topping her previous personal best of 9.825 at Northern Illinois, Feb. 17.
ROOKIES, NO-MORE: Four rookies debuted in the dual against Western Michigan, Jan. 7. Genae Daniel recorded a score of 9.8250 on vault, tied for fourth place in the event. Jacquelyn Patterson and Gwendelyn Cantu appeared on the vault for the first time in their career, with Patterson earning a 9.575 and Cantu a 9.550. Additionally, Patterson competed in the balance beam event with a career-opening score of 9.150. Abby Brushwood, the owner of the first "Key Eagle" of the 2024 season, competed in both the vault and the floor events, recording a 9.775 on the vault apparatus and a 9.350 on floor.
FIRST-PLACE KYRIE: Sophomore Kyrie Lowe took the top-spot in uneven bars at WMU, Jan. 7, with a score of 9.850, good for a career-high. Additionally, the Lake Worth, Fla., native topped her previous personal-best of 9.650 on floor, which she recorded twice in the 2023 season, with a new best score of 9.750.
STELLAR ELLA: Ella Chemotti placed first on the balance beam at Western Michigan, Jan. 7, with a score of 9.925, marking the 11th time the junior has earned a 9.900 score or above.
FIRST TIME AT MINNESOTA: Saturday's dual meet with Minnesota will mark the first between the two schools under head coach Katie Minasola's guidance. After this Saturday's contest, only the University of Nebraska remains as the only Big Ten member EMU has yet to face in its program history.
AGAINST THE BIG TEN: Saturday's contest marks the 29th time EMU will face a Big Ten member in its respective program history, going 7-20-1 in said contests. The Eagles hold four wins over Rutgers University, two against the University of Maryland, and one at Michigan State University.
EAGLES ON ESPN: For the seventh consecutive season, the Eagles will have their home meets broadcast on ESPN3. This season, fans will be able to watch their Eagles compete in all home meets. Furthermore, the Mid-American Conference Championships, March 23, will also be broadcast on ESPN3.
GYMNAST OF THE WEEK: EMU senior gymnast Raisa Boris earned both MAC Gymnast of the Week and Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors in the opening week of the 2024 season.
The senior, who holds a cumulative GPA of a perfect 4.00, was recognized by the leagues office twice in one week after a stellar performance at the dual meet versus Western Michigan, Jan. 7. Boris finished the meet in the top-spot among all all-around gymnast with a career-high score of 39.425. She previously recorded a 39.350 at Bowling Green State University, one year ago, March 12. Additionally, the Minnesota native earned a career-high 9.875 on vault topping her previous personal-best of 9.825 at Northern Illinois, Feb. 17.
IT'S ONLY UP FROM HERE: On March 20, 2023, Ella Chemotti earned an individual bid to the NCAA Pittsburgh Regional Championships on beam. The then-sophomore competed in the second rotation with the University of Maryland. As the final competitor, the Michigan native posted a 9.900 score for fifth overall.
Chemotti is the first Eagle to compete at back-to-back NCAA Regional Championships since Emili Dobronics did so in 2018 and 2019.
KEY RETURNERS: With the loss of four members to graduation, the Eagles will look to a group of key returners for the 2024 season. Eight seniors remain on the 2024 roster in Raisa Boris, Katie Butler, Jordan Jankowski, Trinity Macy, Anna-Grace McCullough, Sophia Rios, Molly Parris, and Mayleigh Vanderbeek.
NEW YEAR, NEW FACES: Seven freshmen have joined the Eagles in the gym this offseason. The incoming first-year class includes Abby Brushwood, Gwen Cantu, Katin Childress, Genae Daniel, Brooke Maycroft, Jacquelyn Patterson, and Taylor Wetherbee.
MEET FOR THE MITTEN: Eastern Michigan competed in a quad exhibition at the University of Michigan, Dec. 3. The Eagles earned a 194.325 team score for fourth place behind Central Michigan University (195.450) in third, Western Michigan University (195.525) in second, and Michigan (197.100) on top. Anna-Grace McCullough placed the highest among all Eagles as she scored a 9.900 on her floor routine.
HELPING HANDS: Caitlin Satler returns to the gym for the Eagles this season in a new position: assistant coach. Prior to her full time promotion, Satler served as a volunteer assistant coach for the EMU gymnastics team after graduating in 2022.
As an EMU athlete, Satler was named the MAC co-specialist of the year in 2021. She was part of the 2021 team that won the MAC Championship and was named to the All-MAC Second Team in that season as well as in the 2020 season. Additionally, Satler tied for the third-highest score in EMU history on beam with a 9.925 in 2021 while also receiving Academic All-MAC honors and qualifying for regionals both as a member of the team and as an individual.
