Blackwell records her third hat trick of the season in the loss
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team fell in its inaugural Mid-American Conference game Saturday, April 1, as the University of Detroit Mercy used an eight-goal fourth quarter to take a 17-7 victory at Titan Field. The Eagles (1-8, 0-1 MAC) received three goals from Mackenzie Blackwell (North Beach, Md.-Northern) – her third hat trick of the year – and a pair from Edie Prager (Lake Oswego, Ore.-Lake Oswego) in the loss while the Titans (2-6, 1-1 MAC) saw five players score at least two goals on the day.
How It Happened
The Eagles took early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before seeing the game tied at 3-3 at the end of the opening quarter. Eastern, which held a 6-1 advantage in draw controls in the opening stanza, received two goals from Blackwell and one from Sydney Lawrence (Wylie, Texas-Plano Senior-Oregon) to help the visitors keep pace with Titans. Abby Alderman (Lusby, Md.-Patuxent) led the way in draws with three to her credit.
In the second quarter, the Titans retook the lead at 4-3 before Blackwell's third of the day leveled the score at 4-4. The Titans then went on a four-goal scoring run to build an 8-4 lead before Amber Alderman (Lusby, Md.-Patuxent) halted the run with her first of the day coming from a free position shot, sending the game into halftime with EMU down, 8-5.
The third quarter saw both teams turn the ball over a handful of times with five for UDM and four for the Eagles. Both teams managed to find the back of the net once with the Titans taking a 9-5 lead before Prager netted the first goal of her career to make it 9-6. Prager scored with 5:42 remaining in the stanza.
A fourth quarter run by the Titans put the game out of reach as the hosts scored six goals in a row to take a 15-6 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the game. The Eagles stopped the run as Prager converted a free position attempt for her second goal of the day and in her career before the Titans added two more goals to close out the game, 17-7.
Game Notes
» The Eagles played their inaugural MAC game as well as their inaugural road MAC game.
» Blackwell led the team with three goals, marking the third time this year and second game in a row in which she recorded a hat trick. The team's leader in scoring with 18 goals on the year, Blackwell has now recorded at least two goals in six of the nine games played this year.
» Blackwell also recorded a team-high-tying six draw controls, marking the fifth time this year she has recorded five or more in a single game. Abby Alderman was the other Eagle with six draw controls, which was one shy of career-best seven recorded one game prior at Butler.
» Prager scored a pair of goals, marking the first goals and points of her collegiate career. She also fired four shots, one more than her previous career best.
» Abby Alderman recorded two assists on the day to join Lawrence as the only Eagles to record multiple helpers in multiple games this year after also assisting on a pair of goals at Xavier, March 12. Her two assists tie for the second-most in a single game in program history.
» Amber Alderman and Blackwell each scored woman-up goals for the Eagles, marking just the second time this year EMU has scored multiple woman-up goals. The only other time it has happened came March 12 at Xavier when Blackwell scored two times when Eastern was up.
