Lacrosse Set to Face Marquette and Butler

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team is set to host Marquette University, Friday, March 24 at Scicluna Field with an 11 a.m. draw before the team ships over to Indianapolis, Ind. to face the Bulldogs of Butler University, Sunday, March 26. The EMU-Butler game is set to broadcast on FloSports and will begin at noon. A paid FloSports subscription is required.
The Eagles (1-5, 0-0 MAC) are coming off a 16-3 setback to the No. 17 Michigan Wolverines while the Marquette Golden Eagles (7-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) look to stretch their winning streak to five after defeating Louisville, 15-11, March 19. Butler, who is coming off a 17-3 loss to Cincinnati, March 22, is set to face Detroit Mercy, Saturday, March 25 with a quick turnaround to face EMU Sunday.

QUICK REVIEW • #17 MICHIGAN: Freshman Cassie Huber paced the Eagles with two of the team's three goals in the 16-3 setback to the No. 17 University of Michigan Wolverines. The Eagles (1-5, 0-0 MAC) competed against a nationally ranked team for the first time in program history, while 10-year program Michigan (7-3, 1-0 B1G) earned its seventh win of the season.
Both Gretchen McCann and Olivia Halverson earned their first collegiate starts in an opening quarter that saw EMU surrender seven goals to the No. 17 Michigan Wolverines. Hannah Bargeron saved six of 13 shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of play in her first collegiate start as an Eagle.The second quarter saw the Wolverines stretch their advantage to 11 with the Eagles remaining scoreless.
After a won draw control by Mackenzie Blackwell to open up the third quarter, Huber scored her first collegiate goal on a dime from Abby Alderman to avoid the shutout. Michigan then answered with two more goals to set the score 13-1 at 6:25 before Tracy Grollman found the back of the net on a free position attempt for her eighth career goal. UM scored one more to take a 14-2 lead heading into the final stanza.
A quieter fourth quarter saw Eastern Michigan surrender two to the Wolverines, while gaining one themselves. Huber connected on her second goal of the day, an unassisted shot that came with only 1:17 minutes left in the game as the Eagles fell 16-3 to the No. 17 Wolverines.
SCOUTING MARQUETTE: In what was Marquette's second-ever win over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent, the Golden Eagles defeated Lousiville, 15-11, by stringing together a strong all-around performance to build on its best start in program history led by a seven-point performance from Mary Schumar and 12 saves from Brynna Nixon. Ranked as the nation's top-scoring offense, Marquette scored nine of the game's final 12 goals in the second half to pull away after trailing for much of the first half. The team's scoring efforts were led by hat trick performances by Tess Osburn and Meg Bireley.
SCOUTING BUTLER: The Bulldogs are currently 2-4 on the season after a tough 17-3 fall to Cincinnati, March 22. The loss marked the team's second consecutive after it dropped a close 10-9 game that saw three overtime periods to Winthrop, March 19, a team that allowed 11 Eastern Michigan goals at the start of the season, March 3. The Bulldogs were victorious over both Detroit Mercy and Linenwood, respectively, for its only two wins on the season.
FACING THE BIG EAST: The game with Marquette and Butler will be the second and third, respectively, for the Eagles against teams in the Big East Conference this year after facing Xavier, March 12. In that game, the Green and White fought viliantly but ultimalty fell to the Musketeers in a 11-10 decision, March 12.
THE GOOFY "HUBER" (GOOBER): Cassie Huber had an incredible showing for the Green and White, collecting two of the three EMU goals against No. 17 Michigan, March 19. The California native scored her first collegiate goal just 25 seconds into the third quarter before netting home her second with 1:17 minutes left in the fourth. Her two points on the day also marked as the first two in her career.
NOT JUST ONE: With Cassie Huber's two-goal performance against the Wolverines, March 19, the Eagles have had at least one player score multiple goals in the same game in all but one contest so far, the inaugural game against Niagara, Feb. 16.
CHASING TRACY: Tracy Grollman fired the second made shot for the Eagles with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter, March 19. It marked Grollman's eighth career goal and her fifth consecutive game earning at least one. The last time an Eagle was on a five-game stretch netting at least one goal in the game was prior to the Michigan contest when Abby Alderman went the first five games with a made goal.
IN THE CAGE: Hannah Bargeron tallied a season-high nine saves against the Wolverines' offense, March 19. The nine top her previous five set at Winthrop, March 3. Additionally, Bargeron collected her first season start and the first as an Eagle.
