Tennis Battles, Falls Just Short at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team fell, 4-3, in a down-to-the-wire match at Cleveland State University today, Jan. 29. The action was the first of the spring slate for the Green and White.
Eastern (0-1, 0-0 MAC) picked up all three of its points in singles action, while earning one team victory in doubles, but failed to collect the overall match point in that portion of the event. Cleveland State (3-1, 0-0 Horizon) earned the victory in its fourth match of the spring season.
How It Happened
The day begin with doubles, where Eastern Michigan was able to pick up one win. The No. 2 pairing of Daniella Shved (Holon, Israel-ORT Holon) and Wendy Zhang (Bejing, China-Crnjanski Gimnzija), each competing in their first match for the Green and White, cruised to a 6-2 win over CSU's pairing of Selma Tounsi and Filippa Frogner.
Zhang continued her high-quality play in singles, defeating Tereze Vevere in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) to earn her first singles victory as an Eagle. Shved continued on her success as well. She played at the No. 5 spot in singles as was able to pick up a straight-set victory (6-3, 7-6 (7-3)).
Eastern earned its third singles win at the No. 6 spot, where Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico-Picacho McGregor) fought off an early challenge from Frogner but ultimately shut the door for a straight-set win (6-3, 6-4).

» Four different Eagles made their Eastern Michigan debut in today's competition. In addition to Zhang and Shved, both Andrea Quiroz (Lima, Peru-La Molina 1278-Alcorn State University) and Linda Eloundou Nga (Yaounde, Cameroon-Augustine Meyou-New Mexico Military Institute) also took the court for the first time. Both Quiroz and Nga lost their respective singles and doubles matches. The duo played together in doubles.
» Mendez picked up her first collegiate victory on the singles side after previously competing in the WMU Invite, hosted by Western Michigan University, Nov. 14, 2022.
Historical Notes
» Today marked the first match for Steve Schram as the head coach of the Eastern Michigan tennis program. In taking the court with the Eagles today, Schram became the ninth head coach in program history since the inception of the program in 1977-78.
» Eastern Michigan has now played Cleveland State on four occasions. Today's result moves the Eagles' record to 3-1 against the Horizon-league member Vikings.
