Tennis Drops 6-1 Home Decision to Buffalo

Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya scored a three-set victory at No. 1 singles for the Eagles’ lone point
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team battled through four, three-set singles matches but came up short, 6-1, against the University at Buffalo in Mid-American Conference action at the Chippewa Club Friday, March 27. The Eagles dropped to 10-9 overall and 1-4 in MAC play while Buffalo moved to 16-4 overall and 3-0 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Buffalo took early control by clinching the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. In singles, the visitors stretched their lead to 3-0 after posting straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Eastern got on the board as Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya (Serang, Indonesia/SMAN 2 Kota Serang) delivered a victory by rallying from one set down at No. 1. The freshman forced and won a dramatic second-set tiebreak, then rolled through the final set to claim a 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory. EMU pushed three other singles matches to a deciding set but were unable to secure wins as Pehal Kharadkar (Indore, India/Daly College Indore) at No. 2, Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) at No. 3 and Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA) at No. 4 all battled to the end.
NOTES
» Eastern fell to 10-9 overall and 1-4 in the MAC while Buffalo improved to 16-4 overall and 3-0 in league action.
» The Eagles trail the Bulls, 16-12, in the series and 8-5 when the match is played in Ypsilanti.
» The loss saw Eastern slip to 25-4 in home duals under Head Coach Ryan Kucera.
» Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya improved to 15-8 on the year and 4-1 in MAC singles matches with all five played at the No. 1 position. The freshman, who has won three consecutive matches, also improved to 2-3 when playing a three-set match and 1-2 when coming back to win after dropping the first set.
» Sabrina Tolstova suffered her first singles loss in MAC competitions after opening the campaign 4-0. Tolstova has played 31 singles matches this season with 10 going three sets where she holds a 5-5 record.

Eastern will hit the road next week for one match as the Eagles will venture to Muncie, Ind., to take on the Cardinals of Ball State University, Friday, April 3, at 12 p.m.
