CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team is set to return to action Friday, Feb. 10 as it travels to Chicago, Ill. for a non-conference matchup against Chicago State University. First serve against the Cougars is set for 9 a.m. CT.
Eastern Michigan (0-1, 0-0 MAC) is in search of its first team victory of the season after kicking off its 2023 spring campaign at Cleveland State University. Meanwhile, Chicago State (1-5) is coming off its first win of the season, a 4-3 nod over Saint Louis University, Saturday, Feb. 4.
The match will follow a traditional collegiate format, with singles matches (No. 1-6) counting for one point. Meanwhile, three doubles matches will be played, but will culminate with just one awarded point. The program that takes two of the three matches will earn the point. Overall, seven points will be up for grabs.
LAST TIME OUT: EMU fell, 4-3, in a down-to-the-wire match at Cleveland State University, Jan. 29. The action was the first of the spring slate for the Green and White.
Eastern picked up all three of its points in singles action, while earning one team victory in doubles, but failed to collect the overall match point in that portion of the event. Cleveland State earned the victory in its fourth match of the spring season.
The day began with doubles, where Eastern Michigan was able to pick up one win. The No. 2 pairing of Daniella Shved (Holon, Israel-ORT Holon) and Wendy Zhang (Bejing, China-Crnjanski Gimnzija), each competing in their first match for the Green and White, cruised to a 6-2 win over CSU's pairing of Selma Tounsi and Filippa Frogner.
Zhang continued her high-quality play in singles, defeating the Vikings' Tereze Vevere in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) to earn her first singles victory as an Eagle. Shved built upon her doubles' sucess as well, as she played at the No. 5 spot in singles as was able to pick up a straight-set victory (6-3, 7-6 (7-3)).
Eastern earned its third singles win at the No. 6 spot, where Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico-Picacho McGregor) fought off an early challenge from Frogner but ultimately shut the door for a straight-set win (6-3, 6-4).
Four different Eagles made their debut, as did Head Coach Steve Schram.
