LAST SEASON: The Eagles finished the 2022 campaign with a 5-12-1 overall and 1-5 record in Mid American Conference competition. EMU averaged a 194.011 overall score in 18 meets, recording a season high of 195.375 against Northern Illinois University, March 13. The program ended the season ranked 52nd nationally with a 194.880 National Qualifying Score (NQS).

FLIPPING BACK: Eastern Michigan finished sixth overall at the 2022 MAC Championships, March19, with a team score of 195.025. The Eagles best event scores came on uneven bars and floor, where the team earned a 48.925 on both apparatuses. Ella Chemotti accomplished a career high 9.900 on bars to tie for the event title with NIU's Natalie Hamp.

STELLAR ELLA: Chemotti led the conference on beam in 2022, with an NQS of 9.875, scoring 9.900-or-better three times last season. The freshman recorded a personal-best 9.950, Jan. 28, tying her for second all-time in the event. The Canton, Mich. native was tabbed as the MAC Freshman of the Year, became bars champion at the league meet, March 19, and was named to the All-MAC First Team. Her performance at the conference championship also landed her on the 2022 MAC All-Tournament Team.

IT'S ONLY UP FROM HERE: On March 22, 2022, Chemotti earned an individual bid to the NCAA Norman Regional Championships on beam. The then freshman shined bright, bringing back her triple series with ease and earning 9.900, tying for second place. Chemotti was the first EMU freshman to compete individually at NCAA Regionals since former Eagle Kaylyn Millick qualified in all-around in 2010.

KEY RETURNERS: With the loss of six members to graduation, the Eagles will look to a group of key returners for the 2023 season. Six seniors remain on the 2023 roster in Hadyn Crossen, Arileyah Harris, Hannah Hartung, Molly Parris, Mickayla Stuckey and Mayleigh Vanderbeek. Parris and Crossen, both 2021 MAC ALL-Tournament Team members, appeared in all 11 meets last season and competed in five as all-around gymnasts. Parris, the 2021 MAC Vault Champion, averaged the highest all-around score among Eagles (38.845) while owning the top average scores on floor (9.773) and beam (9.720). Crossen tied for the Green and White's highest score on vault last season (9.850) at the Towson Quad, Feb. 4. Stuckey also appeared in seven meets in 2022 as a member of the beam and floor lineups.
Junior Raisa Boris also returns in 2023 as a part of Eastern Michigan's event lineups. The Minnesota native competed in EMU's final five meets as an all-around gymnast and tied for the Eagles top all-around score (39.1250). Classmate Anna Grace McCullough also returns after she earned her first career 9.900 on bars against NIU, March 13, 2022. One of the most decorated Eagle gymnasts, sophomore Ella Chemotti looks to build upon her impressive rookie season this year.

NEW YEAR, NEW FACES: Three freshmen and one transfer have joined the Eagles in the gym this offseason. The incoming first-year class includes Priya Karle, Iyana King and Kyrie Lowe. Karle was the 2019 Massachusetts State Vault Champion while King is three-time, Level 8 state and four-time regional champion. Lowe comes to Ypsilanti from the Sunshine State where she took first overall in all-around and beam at the 2022 Level 10 Florida State Championship. Two years prior, Lowe competed at the 2018 Junior Olympic National Championships on beam.
Junior Trinity Macy comes to Ypsilanti from the University of Pittsburgh where she competed for two seasons in 2021 and 2022. As a rookie, Macy earned a spot on the East Atlantic Gymnastics League All-Tournament Second Team with a score of 9.775 on bars at the conference's championship meet. At Pittsburgh, she notched career best scores on bars (9.850) beam (9.800) and floor (9.800).

MEET FOR THE MITTEN: Eastern Michigan competed in a quad exhibition at the University of Michigan, Dec. 10. The Eagles earned a 190.200 team score for fourth place behind Michigan (196.400), Central Michigan University (195.875), and Western Michigan University (193.550). Kyrie Lowe made a lasting impression at her first ever collegiate meet as she led EMU on three events and earned the highest Eagle score of the afternoon, a 9.850, on bars.

HELPING HANDS: Cali Harden returns to the gym for the Eagles this season in a new position: graduate student coach. The five time letterwinner competed in all but four meets in her five year career at EMU from 2018 to 2022. Harden was a key member of Eastern Michigan's vault lineup and earned a career high 9.800 three different times during her tenure. At the 2022 MAC Championships, the Michigan native earned a 9.775 on vault for a 12th place tie, EMU's highest finisher in the event. Harden is joined by student manager, Corey Melcher, who was a three time letterwinner for the Eagles between 2020-2022.

THE YEAR AHEAD: The Eagles will compete at 11 regular season meets this winter, including six conference duals. The team will face eight non-conference opponents in five meets, No. 23 Arizona State, Iowa State University, No. 29 West Virginia University, No. 12 University of Kentucky and No. 13 Michigan State University. Eastern Michigan will host four home competitions, three duals and one triangular. The Green and White will see Ball State University for its home opener, Jan. 22, then play host to Kent State a month later, Feb. 26. EMU will compete against Long Island University and Michigan State on March 3 inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. The team concludes the regular season at home against Bowling Green State University, March 18. The 2023 MAC Championships will be held in Kent, Ohio, March 18.

CLOSE CONNECTIONS: The Arizona State gymnastics front office is no stranger to the streets of Ypsilanti. Jay Santos, the seventh year head coach for the Sun Devils, coached at EMU for two years from 2015-16. Santos coached the Eagles to a 2016 MAC Championship title, the program's first-ever NCAA Regional appearance, and finished the season ranked 17th in the nation – the highest national ranking in the history of the program. In 2016, Eastern Michigan broke eight school records, including three on beam, earning Santos NCAA Central Regional Head Coach of the Year honors. Individually, Santos coached gymnast Rachel Slocum, who scored a career-high 9.900 to win the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional title on floor, to become only the second athlete in school history to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Lacey Rubin, Arizona State's assistant coach, was a four-year letter winner for the Eagles from 2014 to 2018. Rubin was the 2017 and 2018 MAC bar champion and was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team twice. The New York native helped the Eagles to back-to-back MAC Championships in 2016 and 2017.

LAST TIME VS. ARIZONA STATE: EMU faced off against Sun Devils just one time in program history on March 5, 2004. The visiting Eagles fell to Arizona State 198.450-194.875 in a dual style meet.
