Thompson’s Tally Helps Soccer Draw Dartmouth, 1-1

Freshman’s first collegiate goal also stands as the program’s 800th all-time score

BRIGHTON, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Hannah Thompson (Schoolcraft, Mich.-Schoolcraft) scored her first collegiate goal to help the Eastern Michigan University soccer program come back for a 1-1 draw with visiting Dartmouth College Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Legacy Center Sports Complex in Brighton, Mich. Thompson's goal not only helped the Eagles (1-2-2, 0-0-0 MAC) overcome the Big Green's (2-1-1, 0-0-0 IVY) early lead, it also found its way into the record books as the program's 800th all-time goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams looked poised for a fast-paced contest and did not disappoint and each side raced up and down the pitch looking to find a scoring touch. After holding possession for much of the opening minutes, the Eagles turned the ball over with Dartmouth streaking down the left side. From there, Allie Winstanley slid a pass through the six-yard box where Aleena Seales rushed onto the goal on the back side and one-timed her shot low and into the corner to stake the visitors to a 1-0 lead 24 minutes into the match. Four minutes later, Meagan Lukowski (Bay City, Mich.-Bay City Western) nearly pulled the Eagles even, but her close-range effort was saved.

After the halftime break, both teams came out faster and more aggressive with that style nearly paying off quickly for the Eagles. In the 47', Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Catholic) was awarded a free kick just out of the penalty box. O'Farrell sent the ball over the wall and on frame only to see it ring off the crossbar and back into play. Despite the close call, the scoring touch of Thompson came 20 minutes later in the 68' as the rookie collected a loose ball and weaved her way through a pair of defenders. Upon reaching the top of the box, she turned and fired on frame, slipping her shot past the diving keeper and into the net for the equalizer.

The action didn't stop there, however, as O'Farrell nearly won the match in the 78', but, once again, the woodwork was unkind as her shot clicked off the crossbar and out of play. The final chance for the victory came 1:30 from time as Lukowski chipped a strong shot on frame from 25 yards out only to see the Big Green keeper get her fingertips on the ball and tip it over the goal.

GAME NOTES
» Eastern moves to 1-2-2 on the year and picked up its first result after two-consecutive losses.
» Thompson had a career day as she not only scored her first collegiate goal, but also tallied her first collegiate points and nearly tripled her season shot totals after five taken today (entered the day with two total shots on the year).
» Thompson's goal was not only the first of her career, it also stands as the 800th goal scored in program history. The last milestone goal came on Oct. 24, 2019, when Amanda Cripps bagged the program's 750th all-time goal in a 3-2 loss to visiting Akron.
» So far this season, the Eagles have found the back of the net eight times after having scored just 13 times last season. Additionally, Eastern's eighth goal of the year came in its fifth match this year after not arriving until the 12th match last year, a 2-1 win at Northern Illinois University (Oct. 3, 2021).
» Thompson is the second freshman to score for Eastern this season with fellow rookie Secora Johnson (Galena, Ohio-Olentangey Orange) scoring at St. Bonaventure University last week.» The Eagles opened their own range as they fired 23 shots on the day, including 10 in the first half and 13 in the second half. Four different players registered at least three shots in the contest with O'Farrell leading the way with a career-high seven and Thompson adding five.
» Lily Spotak (Palatine, Ill.-William Fremd) made her first career start for the Eagles after having appeared in each of the previous four matches as a substitute in her first four collegiate matches.

HISTORICAL NOTES
» Eastern is now 246-225-62 all-time, needing just four more wins to reach the 250-win milestone.
» The match was the first meeting between the two programs and Eastern's first match ever with an Ivy League school.
