Women take second at Mel Brodt Open
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country program gained valuable experience for its young runners at the Mel Brodt Open, Sept. 16, hosted by Bowling Green State University.
"It was a solid day for us," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "For the women, we are not where we want to be as a team right now but we gained some valuable experience and we will use this as we prepare for the bigger meets in October. Esme Davies had another strong race in 5th place. On the men's side, it was great to see some of our freshmen race their first ever 8K with Sam Peterson and Joey Furlong finishing in the top 10. Linus Vennemann also had a strong race in 7th."
"It was great to see the freshman run their first 8k's, Sam, Linus and Joey really executed the race plan well and moved through the field as a group well," said Head Coach Mark Rinker. "I'm excited to see their development over the rest of the season."
The women opened up the day fast, taking second overall in the 6K race behind senior Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School), who crossed the finish line in fifth in 22:06.2. Junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State) claimed the final spot in the top 10 with a time of 22:40.0.
The men's team sent out a five-man lineup of their youngest runners. Still, three placed in the 8K race's top 10 en route to a fourth place finish. Freshman Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich.-Charlevoix) charted his second career top 10 finish in as many events, placing fourth with a time of 25:53.1. Sophomore Linus Vennemann (Osnabruck, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In Der Wüste") (Seventh - 26:02.6) and freshman Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill.-Barrington) (Ninth - 26:04.1) also tallied top 10 finishes for the Eagles.
