Men place top-fie at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country program saw success at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic at the E.B. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 1.
"It was a solid day for our teams," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "It was great to gain experience in a big meet setting. We came away with a better idea of what we need to work on. Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario-St. Mary's Kitchener) had a breakthrough race at the #3 spot in his first 8k race for us. For the women, our top three ran well, but we have to close the gap before our next two scorers. Overall, we are happy with where we are heading into this next stretch of the season."
The men's team charted a top-five finish ahead of top-flight competition, including US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national vote-receiving University of Tennessee and Great Lakes Region foe and 12th-ranked Kent State University.
Senior harrier Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) led the way for the Eagles in the 8k Men's Gold Division, crossing the finish line in 12th place in 23:44.3. Sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) was right on Magnusson's heels, placing 13th in 23:53.0. Seniors Kemp (32nd in 24:08.9) and Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River)(47th in 24:18.2) rounded out the top 50 for the Eagles.
EMU's women's team charted a 15th-place team finish in the 5k Gold Division, led by junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State) in 37th place. Junior Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina-St. Matthew's College) joined Rono in the top 50, placing 44th with a time of 17:33.2.
The Eagles will take a week to prepare for the Penn State National, Oct. 14, in University Park, Pa., the final national meet for EMU. The meet is currently scheduled for a 10 a.m. ET start, and more information will come closer to the meet.
