Swim & Dive Concludes Fall Slate at Denison Invitational

GRANVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving program will conclude its fall slate with a date in Granville, Ohio, competing in the Denison Invitational, Dec. 1-3. The competition will be held inside the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
Fans can follow the meet via the North Coast Network stream on denisonbigred.com and via live results. Eastern will look to get out to a hot start Thursday as the team has not competed in what will be 19 days (Nov. 12 vs. Oakland University).
The five-team field will include the Eagles, Denison University, Emory University, John Hopkins University, and Washington University in St. Louis.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern dropped its final dual meet of the fall slate, falling to Oakland University 173-125 Saturday afternoon, Nov. 12, at Saline High School. The Eagles (1-3, 1-1 MAC) won six events in the dual meet, including a pair of victories from senior Carlin Hudson and freshman Alexandra Kudo, respectively. Hudson took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (51.42) and in the 200-yard IM (2:05.80), while Kudo won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.02) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.82).
On the diving boards, Savannah Fisk earned career marks in both the 1-meter (258.98) and the 3-meter (231.30). The junior's score in the 1-meter was good for second while three other Eagles rounded out the top-five spots (Veltigian – third, Hughes – fourth, Knapp – fifth).
HISTORY AT THE DENISON INVITATIONAL: The Eagles have competed in the Denison Invitational three times (2018, 2019, 2021) in the last five seasons with its most recent appearance coming last fall season. Additionally, it marks the second time EMU will compete in the invitational in consecutive seasons (2018-19).
EMU placed second (1,924 points) out of five programs last season. Former Eagle Bethany Berger won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Furthermore, EMU took the top four spots in the 3-meter with then-freshmen Camryn Hughes taking second place (471.45), Rebekah Knapp coming in third (437.50), and Anabelle Rosen-Hurley in fourth (418.30).
In the 1,650-yard free finals, Sav Mouat took first with a time of 16:46.67. Kiersten Russell and Lainie Bell took one and two in the 200-yard back finals. Russell took first with a 2:00.25 mark, while Bell finished with a time of 2:00.64. Former Eagle Riley Hofmann notched a second-place finish in the 200-yard fly finals with a mark of 2:01.33 while teammate Ali Staver claimed fourth in the same event (2:03.20).
In 2019, the Eagles took first place with an overall score of 2,223, Dec. 7, 2019. In that meet, former Eagle Alyssa Shugarman made an NCAA 'B' cut in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:27.88. In addition, the time set a new Trumbull Aquatics Center record and landed as the third-fastest time in program history.
Former EMU divers Brielle Johnston and Sophia Tsafantakis met NCAA Diving Qualifying Standards in 3-meter diving. Johnston won both the preliminary and final rounds with scores of 297.70 and 292.20, respectively. Tsafantakis met the standard in the final round, finishing with a mark of 286.45.
In the 200 back, then-senior and current Eastern Assistant Coach Casey Gavigan won both the preliminaries and finals. Her preliminary time of 1:58.41 and finals-winning time of 1:57.94 rank fifth and fourth all-time in program history, respectively.
The 2018 season saw the Eagles place second in the Denison Invitational with an overall score of 2,046, Dec. 1.
ON THE HORIZON: The Eagles will return to action in the winter semester to battle Florida Gulf Coast University, Jan. 5, in a dual meet format in Fort Myers, Fla.
