DEXTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country men's and women's teams closed out the regular season today, Oct. 21, by hosting the annual EMU Fall Classic in Dexter, Mich.

"It was great to host today, it was a great day to run," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We were running to decide a few spots for the conference meet, and I think the runners battled hard. Now, we're going to decide who gets to compete next week."

"Today was exciting giving our younger middle distance guys more experience in cross country," said Head Coach Mark Rinker. "Carson ran a huge PR and I was so happy and proud to see Ronnie in his first race after surgery competing hard in a uniform."

Three Eastern men's harriers completed the race, with freshman Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Deer Lakes) leading the way with a 19th place finish in 15:57.4, setting a career-best. Junior Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron) competed in his first race of the season, crossing the finish line in 16:24.8 and in 23rd place. Freshman Grant Sweningson (North Tustin, Ca.-Foothills) rounded out the men's lineup with a time of 17:57.6 and in 49th place.

On the women's side, the Eagles were paced by freshman Kiera Hansen (Freeland, Mich.-Freeland), who ended the race in 33rd place with a time of 20:06.0, her best time in the 5k at Eastern. Sophomore Ella Garvin (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike) was the second Eagle harrier to finish, crossing the line in 20:57.1, good for 42nd place. EMU's lineup was rounded out by freshman Elena Wheeler (Plymouth, Mich.-Salem), who placed right behind Garvin in 43rd with a time of 21:09.0.

Eastern had two unattached runners for the meet: one in the men's division and one in the women's. Senior Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) opened up his season, posting a 10th place finish in 15:30.7. In addition, freshman Sadie Williams made her collegiate debut, taking 47th place with a time of 21:36.9.

Eastern will be back in action at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Oct. 29, in Athens, Ohio. The meet, held at the Ohio University Golf Course, is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
